Battenkill - Cat 4D: Win
Second time doing this race, first was as a 5 last year. All I can say is that I am NOT doing it again, I hate dirt, hate it. In any case; Off the line the guy who was ahead of me seemed to languish at the start for a good 5 seconds which immediately meant I started halfway back in the field, after slowly picking my way up through the field I got up to my teammates who were riding tempo at the front just in time for the first covered bridge where the first attack went. I immediately jumped on that wheel and followed it through the bridge and the first dirt section. Field was still together at this point but it was nice to have open road for the first dirt section because it tends to get fast.
After this point things sort of re-integrated and we eventually went up Juniper where on the way down we ended up being stopped by our ref because of the same crash that Creatre was talking about, it was already 11:20 at this point, things looked bad and I was told later that it happened because the guys descended on their hoods and hit some rough stuff. Regardless the field was back together at this point because of the slow down.
After that we ended up hitting more dirt where my friend Sean (An avid cross racer) began to just hammer the dirt sections, hills and everything else we came across. Before long I found myself with 5 others (No teammates) OTF of the main field at mile 15 or so. At this point Sean kept doing these "cross hammerings" up every single hill which broke him off from our break while we were trying to work together (Still 50 miles to go). That is when another guy says to me: "Mile 25 we pop this guy, we dont need him in a sprint". I was torn between the fact that Sean was a friend and the fact that I knew he was a threat.
Needless to say the rest of it went pretty simple, we never popped Sean, we got a solid rotation going and we held the field off. Things only got interesting then with about 20 miles to go. The same guy who had spoken to me earlier started putting in little attacks in dirt sections where I would just stay on his wheel for the attacks and wait them out. I knew around Stage Rd. (Mile 50) that I was faring better then most of the guys in my break, Sean looked beat and I had to hold myself back from riding away on the climbs.
I knew that dirt sections did not suit me though so I wasn't going to try anything on Stage Rd. and I waited till that dirt was done. Then just around 10 to go as we came onto the final section of the race where it is mostly flat save for a single dirt climb section I looked back and saw that I had a gap of 30-40 feet that had opened up. That is when I just played my card and put it down and rode away. They tried chasing for a while but I started to put some distance on them. At one point I looked back and saw that the sole chaser saw the guy who had talked with me before, put in the attacks, and more or less had sort of set himself up as the strong-man personality wise in the group. At that point I looked ahead and realized that I was riding up on the back of an ambulance.
The ambulance essentially neutralized me for a good 5-10 secs and my Ref began actively beeping her motorcycle horn at the ambulance. I just stayed behind it and eventually it sped up giving me room to continue riding. Lets just say that for the next 5 miles or so I played a game of chase with that ambulance with my Ref constantly beeping at it.
In the final stretch after the dirt section I knew I probably had it won but I refused to let off the gas, So I rode, I am pretty certain I passed a main field (Or perhaps what was left of it, not really sure) somewhere in there since there was a wheel car and a motorcycle Ref that I passed from another group.
Crossed the line alone, 2nd place was the guy I talked about before 1:33 behind, 3rd was :33 back.
All in all a great race. But I am so done with unpaved roads and mud.

awesome! great way to leave the 5s.
great job to creatre as well. i've never raced battenkill, but from what i hear, getting a good result there is particularly impressive.
edit: wow...also congrats to dnuzzomueller on the win.

Haystack TT - 35+
felt really weird all day today. just not quiet right in warm up and then took a while to get settled into a rhythm after the start, they coned the turns (only 4 of em) so you had to use the sholder and not the road to turn, and on the last one i locked up my rear wheel going into the turn and nearly ate it.
held it together and finished 3rd.
this was the first decent sized TT field so far this year, and my first big field as a 2 racing the other masters. i'm 3 for 3 podiums so far this year now. pretty promising.

Great work creatre, you should be very pleased. Sorry we didn't get a chance to say hi.
My Battenkill result: 2nd place, my last cat 5 race.
Really fun race. 3 of us got away over the top of Juniper Swamp, the first steep dirt climb. None of us was really intending to go there but we got 10 seconds or so on the field so we decided to go for it. We worked really well together in an efficient little paceline for 50 miles, and there was even a good sense of camaraderie. At 5k, just before the pre-sprint gaming started, we all shook hands and promised to try not to crash each other out. The winner nipped me by a half wheel. Still, I got an engraved quart of chocolate milk, which I drank in one swig on the podium.
Course conditions were very good. The rain packed down all the loose dirt without making too much mud. It was a little sticky in spots but nowhere near as bad as it was a couple weeks ago when I rode the course. As usual the event was very well run, it's an amazing feat to manage so many fields of racers and make it all work smoothly and on time.
I don't think I'll be going back up for the champions race tomorrow -- pretty cooked, and currently drinking heavily.

CCCX Circuit Series, Bay View Course, 2/3's.
I got 3rd.. but out of 5 ****ing people! Kind of embarrassing actually.
It was an awkward race, super windy and nobody really attacking except for me and another guy. On the last lap I found myself 10m or so otf with the guys behind playing games, so I put my head down and jumped hard. Held them off up until the last 30m or so, when two guys passed me.

Tumacacori Road Race: cat4
First race as a cat4. Too tired for a full writeup. Hopefully Monkeyclaw will fill in the details. 3 guys off the front including a teammate. I’m in the chase group. Pulling my fair share. Feel strong. Lots of short steep climbs. Powertap data shows I was in Z7 more than Z3,Z4,Z5,Z6 individually. Wow. Flatted with 1.5 laps to go. No wheel support here and the tube I brought has a valve that was too short for my rim. Well, I guess that is a lesson learned in being prepared! DNF. Decided to go ride another 3 hours afterwords in the mtns. Great training day.

Ah, this is cat 4 and we weren’t even close to pulling them in. I was mostly wanted to put some hurt on the guys I was with. My teammate did just fine. I know, I know...

I knew within the first 10 miles that I'd left my good legs at home. Luckily, a teammate got in a breakaway so I was able sit in. Still the heavy wind and constant rollers took a lot out of me; I actually got dropped 15 miles from the finish, but luckily everyone sat up and I was able to fight my way back on. Pack finish. Knackered.

Wow, some great results this weekend, congrats everyone! I'm not sure which cat 4 field it was at Battenkill, but one of them apparently got in to a bit of a fray with a deer...
Circuit Francis J Clarke - Cat 4
tl;dr - 5th place. Made a dumb mistake that potentially cost our GC guy a point.
I ended up at the front of the field with 3 laps to go, our sprinter on my wheel. I didn't want to pull off and leave him in the wind, nor sit up and have us get swamped. So I started upping the pace a bit. It didn't feel like a big effort to me, but I looked and saw he'd sat up behind me, giving me a bit of a gap. He was yelling for me to sit up, but I didn't hear him. That plus my ego or inexperience got the better of me, and I decided to go. 1.5 laps to go, 1 rider bridges up to and flies right by me - I was so deep in it already, I couldn't accelerate even a tiny bit let alone enough to get on his wheel. He'd end up staying away for the win. So I kept my head down, ignored my power meter, ignored whatever might be going on behind me, and just kept going. I'm pretty sure I heard shovelhd yelling "COMMIT!!" in my head once or twice, even though I've never met the guy..
The field caught me maybe 5-10 meters from the line. My teammate had to manage w/o the lead out that he'd been expecting. Lucky for us, he got 3rd anyway, and is now leading the series by 1 point. We expanded our lead in the team GC, too. After talking about it post race I understood my mistake and felt pretty bad about my move, but hopefully I've learned something at least, and won't let myself make the same mistake twice.

7th in the Masters 1/2/3's, DFL in the p/1/2 - flatted with 3 to go.. dammit.
But I did get $5 cash and a Velo Promo t-shirt for my troubles.
Didn't really have the legs for the p/1/2 race an hour after the Masters race.. I think it's time to stop doing two crits a day if I wanna do well in the p/1/2's!
The Santa Cruz crit course was really fun though, had a blast on it.

Saturday - Cat 4/5 - Ronde Van Palouse - At the start line it was F***in snowing a bit and blowing like 20-30mph. Race goes off and I just wait and watch some random dude attacks and I follow 3 wheels back and sit for a bit until we come up a roller with a crosswind so I attack and go clear. I am out there for about two miles and I feel like my rear end is squishy so I stop and check figuring (not the greatest idea but w/e). So the chase group of 5 catch me and I just go and catch onto them and then slowly they widdle off until its just me and tom (fake name). I stay with tom because it is windy and we work together for the first lap and he is really hurting but super nice. Then on the second lap he is struggling so I pull the majority of the time (he agreed to give me the win if we stayed away) because I want some one to give me a little help into the headwind then 20 miles out I just blow him off and take off. I end up rolling up all the Cat 3 masters along with the winner of the 3 masters who was soloing and win by like 6 or more minutes. BTW about 18miles of the race (out of 50) was on dirt roads with gravel and 90% of the dirt riding was into a direct headwind. So it was tough. So basically I was in a two man break for 28miles then solo for 20miles.
After the race I took off from Spokane at 4:00 to head back to Seattle and race on Sunday but they close the pass right before I can go over so I end up sleeping in my car in Cle Elum after waiting till 11pm to decide and sleept for about 4 hrs then I woke up and decided to take off at 4am over the pass and raced at 8:40 on Sunday morning...
Sunday - Cat 4 - Volunteer Park- Attacks go off for some random reason. Then about 20min in the pace eases up and people would randomly launch off the front. A little more than 5 laps to go and I attack and go clear and solo it to the finish. Turns out people were going for primes which I could never hear. Then I got a prime and was happy.
So two wins in two days and 17pts in my first weekend as a 4. My only loses came in sprints and I have been really working on it and I think it will start showing if it comes down to a sprint any time soon.

Right, report for Aaron Shafer Memorial RR, P123. 68 miles, lollipop course with two laps of the loop. Rolling course, just one long "climb" in the middle of the loop mostly at 2-3% before a final kicker. My team started with 5 guys, not bad in a field of about 50. The mood of the peloton seemed pretty lackadaisical, which matched my own. There a couple early moves, I bridged to one that looked like the group might let go, but it got swallowed up shortly thereafter, and then Wertz attacked and no one followed. Eventually two other riders bridged to him, and my teammate tried to do the same but ended up getting brought back on the climb. I came close to getting gapped off on the climb, but it all came together on the descent, and so it went.
Things were pretty hot for a while, not totally insane but a steady fast pace. Still, I was hanging in. I wasn't sure I would make it over the climb with the pack the second time around, but I was game to try. Unfortunately, I didn't get to find out, we were about 2/3 up the climb when one of my teammates hit a stick he didn't see (well, I say stick, but it was like a small log, this thing), overbalanced and went down. I couldn't quite avoid him, so I went down, too. Ass over teakettle, landed right on my back. I got up, saw my teammate who crashed at first was pretty cut up, and his kit was so ruined that his ass was totally hanging out. I saw still another one of my teammates scrambling to get back on his bike and chase the group. So that crash took us from 4 guys still in the race (my final teammate had been, uncharacteristically, dropped on the first lap) down to 1. I knew I was F'd even though I was fine to continue, so I hung out with my teammate until the wheel truck came by to give him a lift. Then I hopped back on and was able to hook up with another guy I know who had been dropped before and we rode out the last 20 miles together. Ended up DFL in 43rd, but at least I finished. My one remaining teammate took 9th in the bunch sprint, after they caught the break with a K to go. So that was good.
So, that happened. My teammate had it a lot worse than me, but I don't know what the F is going on with my luck so far this spring. I can't seem to string together a pair of decent races, and even in the one that went okay, I didn't get a good result. 3 out of 4 race weekends so far I've been involved in some incident that ended my race. It's frustrating. I'm hoping things will turn around next weekend at Sunny King and Foothills.

Great result for our team in that race. My boy is now in the bigs... (would be scared to death to have to sprint that little punk for the win - love that kid, he's a really good friend of mine)
