Downtube cable stop clamps: why are they so hard to source?

For those of you who convert from clamp-on downtube shifters to bar-ends, where the heck do you source your cable stop clamps? i know that millions of ten-speeds with stem shifters were sold with these things, so they *should* be a dime a dozen, but it seems to be impossible to find them on ebay, and when i do, they have outrageous buy it now prices of like $15-20. any suggestions for cheap sources of these things?

Bike coops usually have a trillion of em that they've stripped off those old bikes w/stem shifters. Also, you may have some luck using the clamp-on DT shifter bosses and mounting the cable stops w/barrel adjusters that are made for DT brazeons. Might cost a few bucks but then you've got the barrel adjuster which is nice.

They are not hard to source. Every bike shop can order them and you can have them in a day or 2. The problem is that the price is around $20 new. So, easy to source, but ridiculously expensive...

I don't know, the shop around me has had a couple sets of Campy cable stops with barrel adjusters. Each set was $5. Not too bad I'd say....But I'm sure you can at least get a couple cheaply, probably sans adjusters though.

i don't need the adjusters, as the brake levers or calipers will likely have them already and that would also not be consistent with the vintage look. i'm generally referring to the vintage chromed clamps without any adjusters. i'll try my local bike co-op, that's a good suggestion.

This is C&V, so I assume that you're looking for a vintage part. Suntour stops seem to be the most common by far. I paid $12 for the last NOS Suntour I bought. That doesn't seem so far out of line if one of those clunky new aluminum ones costs $20. Campy and Simplex are harder to find and cost a little more.

I'm pretty sure I have a bunch of those, I'll check tonight and if I do I'll pop it in the mail.

right. i see a ton of those old suntour clamps adorning cheap ten-speeds all over town, and that's exactly the part i'm referring to. $12 for a NOS one is not out of line, as you say, but as a used part i would expect there to be tons available for a couple bucks a piece. maybe the used ones are worth so little that sellers don't bother posting them on ebay. i'll have to check my local co-ops.

thanks, i saw that one, but it's too modern looking for anything older than late 80s...

It seems like the chrome is thin on the Suntours. I've seen a lot of rusty ones, but maybe it's because they're on cheap bikes that aren't well cared for. The Simplexes have the same problem. The Campys have the best chrome, but that figures.

if your bar end shifters came with cable stops for braze on shift mounts, you can just attach them to the old downtube clamp. Just takes a little bit of disassembly/reassembly. Make for a nice neo-retro look imho.
