Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My ultegra crank is one of the ones recalled. It’s not showing any signs of trouble so I am just rolling with it. Though, now that I hear I could potentially get a new bike because of it, that changes things.

When I had my bad crash a couple months ago on my brand new bike. I laid on the ground, not because of pain but because I was scared to see what happened to my bike. I am one of those to a T. Mainly because If my bike is broken beyond repair It won’t be replaced instantly and I have zero patience. I also don’t want to have to use money to replace what I already have. That is taking money away from things that I don’t have. I am sure if my injuries were ever severe I would think differently.

Feh, fixing the bike is easy and quick.

[day after hip surgery]
Me: So how long before I can get back on the bike?
Doc: 12 weeks.
Me: So how about 6 weeks?
Doc: 12 weeks, the bone needs to heal.
Me: Uh huh.

[8 weeks later]
Doc: You're healing up nicely, you can probably start biking cautiously.
[long silence]
Doc: You're already riding, aren't you?
Me: Yeah, for a few weeks now.

Perhaps he meant cautiously, as opposed to carelessly?

I'm a pretty cautious person, so it would have been 14 weeks for me.

Understood. I went with it anyway.
Not so long ago I was at the top,of the leader board in posts count. I’ve dropped to seventh place! Call it a filler post.

Got done with dinner, stepped outside, and promptly began freezing my ass off. Started running to stay warm but I had such a big meal that wasn't very pleasant. It's probably not a good idea to head to dinner in shorts and tshirt anymore.

Got home and I see a tail head under a car in the parking lot. What the hell was that? I cruise around the other side of the car to see a skunk scampering away. Cute little guy.

He has a back up bike but said he can't keep up with his group on it. This guy is pretty fast and it's hard to believe the bike is making that much difference.

Anyway he went off on an anti Shimano rant about how he'll never buy Shimano again, I hate Shimano, etc. etc. Says he has to buy a new bike right away so he can ride with friends, etc. Next day he sends a pic of a Canyon that he ordered and it has Dura Ace DI2. WTF? Next day after ordering the Canyon he writes my friend and says the new crank came in for his Tarmac.
People can be irrational.

Also flying on Friday.

I remember crawling under a house with a coworker years ago to inspect ductwork, and when we got in far enough to use flashlights, I saw two sets of eyes staring back at us. Both sets started hopping up and down and coming towards us. Only one animal in that area does that. I immediately turned and started crawling out. My buddy asks me whats wrong so I yell "they're SKUNKS". He went by me like I was laying on my back. LOL

I was fine 'til about 1600 hours. We had some Wyoming style winds today but they're starting to die down now, only 16 mph at the moment.

Overall effort. Rode it somewhat conservatively, had maybe 5-10 more watts on a max effort (on a good day)
Yikes, and here I am seeing this immediately after being very pleasantly pleased that I was able to do 15 x 24 secs at >4 w/kg without excessive suffering. Of course I have a few decades and kg over you. Nice numbers

I was told 4 weeks to a stationary bike, then 4 more before I could ride outside. That put it around the end of January so I was out on my fat tire bike.

As for the cane thing, I got this gem. Folds up and fits in a small backpack or a jersey pocket when the weather was warm enough to be wearing cycling jerseys.
