Mystery CL bike

I'm not so much interested in valuation as I am in identification. Looks pretty decent, but likely a repaint. A ubiquitous Japanese bicycle?

$60 in Boston with forged drop outs, nice paints and components. Don't you need to buy this bike first and ask questions later?

beats walking if your size.

painted headtube looks similar to Raleighs of the 70-80's.

Does look to be early 80's Japanese built with the not so great pics and no major details on the frame and a bit of a mix of lesser mid level non distinctive components hard to say actual maker. It does look like the frame has been partially repainted the blue panel paint is not original. I would say it is good deal at $60 the frame looks good and it has decent alloy components.

Well, it's about 20 miles away--far enough that it would have to be something special to take the time to go see it; hence, my question.

well 20 miles in Boston is like driving a 100 miles in the Midwest. I’d pass.

I guess if you are that bike poor? I have so many projects that I would not take it for free.

lack of space and time means that I have to be more selective as to what I pick. Unknown low/mid level frame with common components are a burden at any price

I have space and eventually time and deep parts bins. I’ve also been occasionally fixing bikes up for a local group that supplies bikes to recent immigrants. I’m not interested in flipping bikes for small money on CL.

That's fine and dandy. It is still not a good deal. Looking at that local CL and searching the bikes category with a $60 max limit pops quite a few better candidates with original paint and branding. Those would make for better projects for your cause

$h1t, on that locale there is a Fuji Touring Series III for $35 bucks.

Reminds me of an early to mid 80s Fuji with the thicker lugs.

Link? I don't see anything on Boston CL that is anywhere near the same quality frame for that price.

You meant to say, unknown frame quality? We still don't know what it is, and the components puts it at best mid level.

Looking at that CL area if I was fixing bikes to donate I would rather go with any of these:

$35 bucks, the guy is also selling a nice nishiki for the same price:

$35 bucks for a Fuji Touring Series III! I wish it was near me...

$45 Nishiki:

Any of those bikes would make a better donor for less and they are not the only ones. Search the category, put a price limit, and see what they have.

I saw those and wouldn't take any of them for free.

The op bike has brazed dt shifters, forged drops, good looking geo, nice lugs and fork crown, popular 22-23 size, etc.

The colorway reminds me of something like a Raleigh Gran Prix or a Super Gran Prix. Not sure of the years those colors were used.

I understand where you are coming from but the OP said he fixes bikes to donate. Any of those would make a better donation that the sort of unbranded frame you and I would find interesting.

And if it was local to me the picture of that Fuji would have been from my living room.

I should have known better than to post this question in this sub-forum; I'm not interested in the value of this particular bike or of other "deals" on Boston's CL, but just trying to identify what this bike might be. It looks far more interesting than a very beaten up Fuji tourer (and I've had a couple of those in the past). Plus, it's my size, so there's also the possibility I'll keep it around (unlike those others). Appreciate the help, though!

Show up in a hat like Dudley Heinsbergen and point out all the tiny scratches in the paint before proceeding to low-ball the seller.

To hide the rusty drive chain and/or paint/tube damage; speaking from experience.
