Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yeah. With my luck, she'd get drunk and get into a car accident. I'd not only get fired and sued, but I would also end up in jail.

I think it was our other intern who mentioned during a group lunch that she had recently turned 21. That intern was our President's daughter. Nepotism is rampant here.

In-laws in town so I got the hall pass to ride for a few hours. Bookended some endurance miles around a local hammer ride. Felt great to get out, feel some real world speed, and catch up with some local racers. Had good legs too and helped stretch things out a bit. Scale at 143# last weigh in.

group ride on Fiesta Island

Wow, I can't believe any work place would set up holiday gifting between coworkers. Seems like a situation setup to create problems and multiple visits to HR.

amazing how 2 people can take up a whole hotel gym. Of course one of them was getting on the peloton right when I walked in. Hour later he is still on it. Think it’s a hockey team or something. The other is literally using every piece of equipment i. his own personal circuit.

Its very common in private companies. I've worked for 2 private companies all with >500 employees, in both cases the CEO/president was the son of the former president. In both cases they were competent and markedly better compared to 2 other places were the top management was poor but supposedly assigned talent and merit.

Of course, writing this from my work computer which might be monitored and reported to the nepo but talented head

Yeah. I got a cookbook last year. Recipes from areas of the country with noted National Parks. I was going to report it to HR because of the lasting impact the creation of National Parks had on indigenous people, but i let it slide.

Coal business in this part of the country pretty much went down the tubes a while ago. So many plants have made the switch to natural gas.

There is a woman here who actually works under her father in the same department. The justification is that there is a manager in between them, so it is ok. There was another guy whose desk was about 25' from his mom's office, and he lived with her. (How weird would that be?) He took a job somewhere else a few months ago. One guy who got fired for being drunk on the job is the son of a retired employee who held the same position that his son did. A guy down the hall from me is the son of the former No. 2 transportation guy, and his aunt was once in marketing. Another guy here now is the son of a retired employee who has been retained to do some consulting work. Our former paralegal who left to go in-house with Wawa (Yes. They have a free cafeteria stocked with Wawa food.) is the daughter of a former track inspector.

I could go on and on.

Last weekend was the winter training camp for the men's racing team of the San Diego Bicycle Club, in Anza Borrego Springs CA. It's a pleasant, sleepy little town with some big climbs and mountainous riding nearby. I was not present due to our infant, but I did a lot of the work behind the scenes to make it happen. Sounds like it was a success and we have several promising new racers who are strong and enthusiastic about racing with SDBC in 2024. Nice.

Saturday morning photo. There's actually a bunch of sweet metal sculptures like that all around the town's perimeter
