Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I've got plenty enough opportunities in my life to HTFU as it is. I don't need an extra HTFU challenge merely by walking out the door. SMH

Are you comparing being wet in one case versus not wet in the other?

How about apples to apples? Drench yourself with water first before going out in 20F. Report your findings.

I suspect I'm one of the few people whose rain bike and trainer bike are the same bike. As a rain bike, it's hard to beat a plastic bike with disc brakes, while on the trainer, I like the solidity of the thru axle connection to the trainer, because QRs always feel just a bit...flexy.

My last ride before my trip East last week was a Sunday ride, after a rainy Saturday, so I took the Canyon, adding the S-blade fender. Then I travelled, getting back Friday night late. Sunday, it was nice and dry, so I took the Litespeed. So, last night when I got ready to Zwift, I discovered the Canyon was a bit...dirty. It didn't seem to affect the performance any, so I guess it's okay. Looks a little strange, though - here I am riding indoors on a muddy bike. Oh, well.

...back when I was a poverty stricken hippie in MN, we used to hang damp laundry out in sub zero temps. It freezes quickly, and you can shake it out to get rid of most of the water. Then you arrange it at an appropriate distance from the wood stove, and it dries toasty and warm. What the hell, have you never left East TN ? It's a big, magnificent world out there, VV, and a lot of it gets cold in the winter time.

Not where I live now, admittedly. But I am olde and feeble now. And I always wanted to grow oranges.

It’s the same reason people climb mountains or do other crazy stuff, endorphins. When I lived in the city I used to love to take a walk around the neighborhood during a snow storm, mainly for the challenging conditions, but also for the unique serenity and peacefulness it brought to a place that otherwise never sleeps except for Sunday mornings.

You put on a nice, big down parka with a hoodie, sturdy boots and warm hat and gloves and you’re ready for whatever comes. Invigorating!
All good, as long as your driveway doesn’t have a 25 degree slope.

When I was at Allegheny, and then in Ithaca, I actually enjoyed the cold and snowy weather. Yeah, at various temps different things happen, like at 0 F, my moustache would start freezing as moist exhalations from my nose condensed on the cold whiskers and then froze. At -20, you can feel the hairs in your nose freezing when you inhale. And going from outside at < 0 F to indoors at 68 F felt like opening the oven and climbing in.

I liked running in the cold, especially if there was fresh snow on the ground. It dampened the sound so all I heard was my own breathing and the *squinch* of the snow compressing under my feet.

Now, of course, all of this is predicated on 1) being young, and 2) having a nice warm apartment or dorm, and nice warm workplace/classrooms/labs.

I can't stand being cold indoors. Being cold indoors triggers feelings left over from a brief dark period in my life, after I'd finally given up on my crazy old boss - who had convinced me that I had to stick with him because I was too closely associated with him and his enemies would prevent me being hired - and before I got a job. BTW, it turned out my association with him not only didn't impede my getting hired, but actually helped - those who knew our work knew MY work.

I'm pretty much with you there. Some days, my commute home will be in rain, and that's a hard door to open when it's already raining. Starting to rain while I'm already underway, is far easier to stomach.

Thank god for smart trainers. I won't go outside for more than a commute these days if there is a decent chance of rain.

I used to be more tough in the rain during college in the PNW. that's where I got my start. I'd do cold (sub 40 F) and rain, but not both. When the forecast called for both - we would have team sessions (collegiate) where we would ride dumb trainers together in one of the gym auxillary rooms. They had a fleet of em.

I always bring extra kit if I'm in more than one CX race on a rainy day. But sometimes there's not enough time to change between races, so you start wet.

That's my rule, generally - I'll ride if it looks like rain, but not if it's actually raining.
