They can switch between friction and indexed. Hmmm. That somewhat bursts my bubble. Might have to hold out for some shimano shifters. Thanks for the speedy input. Certainly saved me some frustration!

Shimano 6-speed index is not easy to find, You may have better luck finding a shimano 7-speed cluster/freewheel...BUT...Shimano and Suntour indexed stuff did not always mix very well. See if you can find Shimano 7/8 speed barcons (did they make 6's??) and run the alternate cable routing and keep the 6-speed cluster (or go to 7-speed and rund the cable regular. I THINK this will work, but you ought to confirm before spending much $$.
