I have no idea why I have to do it. Every weekend I break down one of the three bikes I own and clean it immaculately . I pull the chain and soak it in degreaser and I scrub the tires. If I do get a rare Scratch, I use appliance paint to touch it up and buff it out with 1000 grit sandpaper.(I found paint to match all three bikes) The strike points on all three bikes are covered with 3M Vivid.
I don't do that to my Cars or my Laptop or my clothes. (When I was younger, I was a real Motor head.)
Only my Bike gets the preferred treatment.
......probably because my soul and sweat are in them.

I am somewhere in between you and my "Pig Pen" friend whose bike always looks like he just finished a century ride with many oil filled puddles on the route.
When it is chain cleaning/lubing time I'll do a full cleaning. In between I'll just do a wet rag wipe-down - the equivalent of applying deodorant vs. taking an actual shower...
OK, maybe I'm closer to "Pig Pen."

Ups!
The Polo & Bike model has a frame painted with a very high quality white metallic paint. The coating is so strong that not a single scratch from my fall. Only the anodized coating of the connecting rods is abraded, but not to the base metal. Happy as an elephant.

Hey 5 - After cleaning your bikes, don't forget to reposition the bars correctly. Wouldn't want to poke your eye out in an aero tuck.
I work on my bikes, too.

Forgive me. I am 50+8 years old, and I no longer wink at aerodynamics. I just want to get to the end of the road and not die of osteochondrosis or sciatica. That's why I have high handlebars.
This is another one of my fixed gear. I also wash it, lubricate it, and take care of it. I never drop it or put it on the ground.

Pipe cleaners can assist cleaning some hard to get to spots. Work great on a cassette.

My bikes are kept clean, but not spotless. One person I ride with has the shiniest cassette and chain I've ever seen. Mine aren't even close to that clean, but I do clean the drivetrain often enough to prevent grit from wearing it out.

I found some cheap straw cleaning brushes. With the smaller dental pick brushes they work good enuff. Maybe once a month or as needed for me.

In the wind
I tried to join the ocd club a few years ago. Chain cleaning, cassette disassembly, q-tips, touch up paint, you name it.
The time and effort seemed to interfere with riding time, so I gave it up.
I'm happier now, but the bikes are kinda dirty.

My drivetrain gets worn out by my massive geriatric power.

When I first started going on the local race ride, my much fitter and more experienced friend said to watch out for the guys whose bikes were filthy but their drivetrains were clean.

I have these pedals:

and I use flat black auto touch up paint on the wear points from my shoes. It does not last that long, but I keep doing it. I also love to clean my bicycle.
