Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Another "what should I buy thread".. but an awesome one!

SO my buddy has just cracked his 2008 giant tcr frame, and he has no proof of purchase, so a warranty is likely out. I have charged myself with helping him find a bike, since that is my favorite thing to do... I am looking to you all to help fill in the gaps. Looking for a full carbon, at least ultegra/force level, and not a super agressive build (he rode 7500 miles last year and doesnt race). We are in Minneapolis, so have some good shops here, but also recognize that online is often a waaay cheaper deal. here is what I have identified so far. I like the Boardman frames from Wiggle in the UK, but without any local dealers that is a hard sell.

What am I missing... There are BMCs at CC at that are cheapish (well...), but that is what I ride, and he wont want to look like a team...

Bring it!

scott is pretty dope, but a pretty stiff ride. maybe a cannondale supersix or specialized tarmac?

I do love the bianchis, I'm not going to lie, but I can only comment on their aluminum frames from earlier this century.

1. What's the budget?

2. Why are you looking at complete bikes? If the old frame is cracked, you can get a nice carbon frame for <$1k and swap all of the components. Even if you have the LBS do *everything* it'll still be no more than a few hundred to swap everything over.

They should all have a slightly different ride characteristic. My friend in Canada rode most all of the popular models and settled on the Stevens.

agree on all points.

in the OP, that thing about not buying a BMC because you have one is beyond dumb. sorry to be blunt.

I would buy one of the bare frames from CC.

+1 on a frame and transfer unless the accident that cracked the frame also majorly rashed up the parts.

I'll say it - if you are consdering online, look at Bikes Direct. Just get a Titanium bike and be done with it, save yourself (him) up to/over a grand. If money is no object (as can often be the case in here), or anything but carbon is a deal breaker, please disregard.

...but $3,500+ for a bike (Scott/REI) where the only Dura Ace is the BB?
