Ugly De Rosa

A friend of mine was offered this De Rosa and asked to put a price on it. He likes the brand but this one is really ugly. Would like to know year, model, etc. and if it's worth it to put some effort & money on it. Frame apparently is OK, no bent tubes or dents. What do you think?

It's a "Uggo" De Rosa? Your friend must've done tons and tons of high speed descents, sitting on the top tube, for there to be that kind of wear.

That bike is not ugly, just needs a little TLC.

It appears that the bike was used on an indoor trainer where someone continually dripped sweat on the top tube and never cleaned it off. It will destroy paint and even the top tube overtime, but should be repairable/paintable. And it still a DeRosa...

Nice headset, aero post, monoplanar brakes, crank.
Is RD unscratched?
Hoods look good.
Modolo stem and bars?

Mid-80s, but no chrome means not a Pro.
Top tube needs inspection, but strip and powder coat isn't an outrageous expense. Cables, bar tape and you are a DeRosa owner.

from the looks of the internal brake routing and the seat stays I'd say very late 1980's or early 1990's

Thanks all! Maybe I wasn't clear - my friend spotted this bike and the owner said he will sell it, but my friend has to make an offer. He asked me to seek advice on the forum, and it seems the consensus is it's not so ugly after all...

I agree with offering $50-75 and going from there, but the components look in decent shape. I'd probably go $250-300...

Pass or get it under $100. Needs repaint, higher end group....its only worth what someone will pay. Anyone paying real money for a DeRosa expects it to be top notch. Unless, you plans full resto.

My friend already has 2 Colnagos, a Pinarello and other classic Italian bikes. He always wanted a De Rosa but they are very scarce where he lives, so I think he'll probably buy and repaint this one.

I love DeRosa! That one needs some love for sure, but I wouldn’t hesitate to grab it for $100 or less

I would offer a lowball value for the parts, meaning everything but frame/fork and wheels and that would be about $200. Crankset with its BB alone would probably sell for about $100-125.

For a decent price, that De Rosa's could be a sweet ride!

Tell him to buy it, overhaul it, and keep it exactly as it is, with the ugly saddle, missing paint, no bar tape and single hood. Then he will have a De Rosa he can commute on and lock up outside, without worry.

Very nice frame , I agree someone trained indoors on it and tried to kill it.

Would it be better for him to strip the rust and re-finish it or to leave the rust on it as is?
