After mourning Squirt for several months, we're back in the canine camp with a new shelter adoption, another terrier mix who was already named Jasmine. We'll probably call her Jazz or Jazzy.

I missed this the 1st time through. I guess we're still having issues with the reply with quote and multi-quote function. I'm having to cc and paste your post with the greyhound / C&V analogy.

here's our 18 month old Collie/Shepard mix Sallie admiring my awesome home footwear. They also double as Dave Matthews Band Concert Footwear but i've yet to use them for this purpose.

I always believe this kind of thread is useless on any special interest forum if not connected with the forums main topic. I have some different hobbys and in each one of them similar threads show up. What are you drinking, show your firearms, dogs, cats, shoes, music, etc. Sorry - but if not having a bike in the pic in this thread I really cannot see any point in it... (and yes - I am an old grumpy man)

That said...

My old French tourer and Bosse the Finnish spitz. Used for hunting (that is - the dog).

I hate to intervene, but "Jazz" is already taken by this terrier:

He is a 17 year old Toy Rat Terrier who also goes by the names: Jazzy, Jazzmo, Jay, J-Money, Bad, and "Damnit Jazz".

His other interests include fine guitars (mostly the cases), and gardening.

EDIT: After a short discussion with him, he did say that he would be ok with another dog using one or more of his names, so long as they never meet. You're probably good.

Max, Jack Russel/Beagle, or a Jackabee. When he was a puppy he loved riding in a front basket, but 25 pounds is a little much now.

Yeah, she sort of has the same look Max did. I didn't get him as a really little puppy, he was a adoption from someone who got him and just couldn't handle the energy levels.
The good thing about a terrier beagle mix is that while they like to run, they can't seem to do it in a strait line, so will eventually circle back.
And the curiosity thing never goes away. And the willfulness and knowing just how far they can push you sniffing around before coming when called...

I have a Houndabout trailer for him now. He seems to like riding in it. I like it because people give more room towing a cute dog.

This thread made me start misting up over the last dog. I've never been ashamed to shed tears over a dog.

This is from the day we found Tippy, left starved in a box full of excrement in the alley (in cold weather, no less). The finding was actually done by the big black dog in the picture, Ben. Ben was kicked out of prison for misbehaving (long story short-- he was in a prison training program, and does not like white males). He's a grouch, but he hovered over little Tippy the first couple of weeks we had her. The very first night, she was in a little pen we had bought her, whimpering, and big, grouchy Ben lay down next to her so they could touch thru the pen, instantly calming her. I've never seen anything like it.

Here she is a year or two later. Behind her is Willy, who we found abandoned in a local park about year before we found Tippy. He was deeply untrusting-- clearly abused-- and Tippy was the first dog we had ever seen him play with.

Here are the three of them with our remaining dog, Maizy, who was found wandering starved in a local alley.

There's a reason all the catalog companies (L.L. Bean, Land's End, etc.) use golden puppies in their advertising.

Sophia and Desmo. We got Desmo at about two years old from a rescue org. He was always the gentleman, no behavior issues, never destroyed anything around the house. But he loves to jump. When my wife and I went to see him at his foster home, he jumped a coffee table to get between us on the couch. When he was six we got Sophia, who was about 8 weeks old. Sophia was quite the handful as a puppy and I have the scars to prove it, but when she got a little older she was my girl. People talk about that one dog they had... that's Sophia.

Desmo is 16 years old now and having health issues, which is easy to understand given a retriever's average life span is 10-12 years. He still seems to be having fun though, even if he can't nail the landings of those jumps he still tries. Our vet calls him a rock star, the oldest retriever she knows by a long shot. Unfortunately, Sophia was diagnosed with cancer in October and passed away in December at the age of 10. We all miss her. A lot.

Desmo was the typical big brother to her. He'd tease her sometimes, ignore her most of the time, but if you started something with her you WOULD be dealing with him post haste. He's never gone after anyone but back in the day had a bark that would back people away from the other side of a closed door. I watched it happen. He also brought a guy to his knees with a right jab but that was all in fun...While the guy rolled around holding his groin Desmo sat down next to him wagging his tail.

Sophia and Desmo on her first night with us. Sophia. The 'triever twins in later days. Desmo at 16 years old.

Thanks for taking the time to post Sophia's and Desmo's story, Craig. You were very lucky to have had Sophia for so long, and she was lucky to have had you. Desmo's long life just about has to be a record.
