Malaysian versus Japanese Deore XT?
Everyone,
I'm about to rebuild the rear wheel on my touring bike. The Deore XT hub on it now was made in Japan, but I see stamps on new ones that say Malaysia. Does anyone have any opinion/experience/information as to whether the quality is similar?
Thanks . . .
Jonathan

It's more of a "do you trust Shimano" thing.
Shimano makes a lot of non Japanese (most?) parts, including China.

It's built to Shimano specs, it's Shimano.
If it's not, it's not.

I have only had experience with the 6700 and 6800 Ultegra hubs made in Malaysia and both have no detectable differences in quality from the older Japanese versions. I think it mostly comes down to how well the parent company manages their foreign factories and Shimano has done very well so far from what I've seen. I have a Japanese Yamaha motorcycle that has a few parts made in China that do not have the same quality parts finish that I'm used to with this brand. Japan has been very hard hid by China in particular stealing intellectual property and early on a few mfrs. tried to partner with mainland China companies (if you can't beat 'em, join 'em) only to find out their joint efforts resulted in China stealing their technology and starting an independent company. Plenty of mfrs. are just trying to squeak out a few extra bucks by going to cheap labor countries and don't spend the effort to ensure quality. This is the way the world has been moving for quite awhile now where what used to be a company that was the pride of their country is now owned by some foreign conglomerate who spreads the various operations of the company all over the world. The end product is what counts.

I wouldn't worry about Malaysia. They have Roti Canai and Laksa can't be bad with delicious food like that ; )
Shimano for SLX, XT and XTR (as well as the road stuff in the same vain and some other stuff as well) makes good quality stuff generally and doesn't have a ton of issues and if they do they take care of those issues. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Yes would love for all my Shimano stuff to be made in Japan I haven't had any real issues with stuff not made in Japan that could be pinned on that country in any sense.
