Beautiful Spring day in the Carolinas. I took a 50 mile route from my house to the in-laws and added a huge loop to make it an even 100 miles with 5000’ of climbing. I still don’t have all my endurance back as I soft pedaled the last 10 miles or so.

I was supposed to join some buddies in the N.C. mountains for a big 100 miler but the high winds there scared me off. I could just imagine doing a fast technical descent only to find a tree across the road. Plus the hardest climbs we’re going to be into 20+ mph winds. It seemed very challenging but just not enough fun.

9 mile ride in dry conditions midday today on Day 27 of #30daysofbiking . Then, later, went on an 8 mile ride in the rain with about ten other adults and three kids. This ride preceded the 10th birthday celebration of Freewheelin' Community Bikes in Indy. Freewheelin' is a coop that serves the community by helping kids learn about riding and fixing bikes. The kids are rewarded for participating in the program by being given a bike.

After that frontal system blew though here, the wind shifted from out of the NE causing it to be several degrees cooler today (only about 70).

Got in a nice 70 minute pre-lunchtime ride. It really worked up an appetite.

A short tandem ride this afternoon followed by a less-short solo ride. Looking ahead to some rain over the next few days.

Sugaring season over. Mud season pretty much over. Which means gravel season is beginning. First ride off the pavement this year. 19 miles/1676’.

Had the miseries Saturday, mostly snoozed all day. I usually get body aches and sinus headaches from barometric pressure drops with approaching storm fronts. There was nothing in the forecast but, sure 'nuff, a big 'un hit late Saturday night. After that I felt pretty good.

I must have needed that rest day because Sunday I rode my fastest times on a familiar 30 mile circuit with some loops since before my shoulder/neck injury in May 2018 and bout with thyroid cancer. I was starting to think I'd never get my mojo back, but I was able to at least borrow a little spare mojo for Sunday's ride.

I'd like to claim credit for all the physical therapy I've been doing, but I think the bike helped a little. I snagged an old 1993 or '94 Trek 5900 frame from a friend (he only wanted the Dura Ace groupset; I only wanted the frame). He put it back together with some perfectly good Shimano 600 Tricolor components, Dia Compe brakes and Wolber Alpine rims. Good enough for my level of conditioning. The Trekenstein is about 5 lbs lighter than my steel road bike and I can feel some advantage on climbs.

Or maybe I just had a good day. Either way, I'll take it. Feel like I'm almost ready to join the local club B-group rides again.

Twenty miles this afternoon. A couple of mild hills. A few sprinkles but mostly dry and warm enough. Day 29 of #30daysofbiking .

Day 30 of #30daysofbiking . Took car to tire dealer for tire replacement and rode home 3 miles. Early afternoon 10 mile tandem ride. After that, a seven mile solo ride. Rode all three of my bikes today. 528 miles in April, all told.

Mayday! Mayday! 20 miles in a M-W-F club training ride. Shortened the ride because of predicted rain which did not materialize. But it was pretty head-windy. The return trip was pretty tail-windy.

Yesterday about 13 miles, a long lazy loaf to the greenway and back. None of my potential rides felt compelling, but my rule is, if you're thinking you might need to exercise, that means you should go, so I went. My first official hot ride, in noonday heat, mid 80s. After three days of heavy yard work (it was giant meteor day for the residents of one planting bed which had been taken over by about 60 young redbuds, those all came out after a lot of root-pulling) I was well on the way to acclimated, but I felt the heat. I have a good start on a farmer's tan.

Today, a quick hit hill workout over the mountain and back. 86F, sunny, noon-time, about an hour but only because I stopped twice to take pictures. Fully used to the heat now.

So, how do you feel after 30 days? Anything different now from on day one?

I got back about a half hour ago and took a shower... Nice 14.83 mile ride down along Riverside Dr along the James River here in Richmond, VA. I clipped on a smartphone holder onto the steering stem and enabled Strava. It was dead on accurate...

14.83 miles... 56:04.... 15.8 mph

Speed run to the greenway at lunch. Time would have been a PR last year but standards have been raised. Arm tan is coming along nicely.

Feeling about the same but glad to have ridden at least a bit every day in April. (Didn't ride at all today on May 2.) Got together earlier this evening with a small bunch of folks who had also participated in #30daysofbiking . They have done it for several years, while this was my first. But, I had for several years been involved in the National Cycling Challenge, a similar event, primarily because my pre-retirement employer had encouraged employees to do it - that was one way to earn lower health insurance premiums.

Out at 1:06AM today for a slow and easy 53 miles so far. Roads were empty for the most part, , but still had a driver pass close by even though there was a second lane to their left without a vehicle anywhere else in sight. Just does not compute.

Back out for the second part of today's ride. Wind picked up so some good effort went into completing the additional 75 miles. 128 total solo miles and even found a penny.

35 mile club ride this morning. Foggy and damp but almost warm and no rain. A bit of a tailwind on the way out and headwindish on the way back but not bad.

Annual Waterbury VT Gravel Grinder - first event of the season that doesn’t have “mud” in the title. 26.5 miles, 2755’. Well organized and fun. Thanks to the Waterbury Area Trail Ass. for putting it on!

I got out this morning and got in 25 miles. I rode my Airborne Zeppelin. Temp in the high 60's with 95% humidity and light SW wind. Got home and did some work around the house, inside and outside. I am cooking dinner for a friend this evening, so I have been prepping the past hour or so. We are having bone and skin less chicken breast stuffed with ham, cheese and caramelized apples and roasted on the charcoal grill. Sides of vegetable stir fry and pasta with fresh fruit salad.

A 100 miler from the house. It wasn’t very hot but I lost a lot fluids from the high humidity. It didn’t help that I started the ride dehydrated from walking 18 holes every day this week in humid conditions. I drank a lot of fluids but apparently not enough. I got back to the house to the sound of thunder.

My mid ride meal was a bit much for doing another 50 miles but it was SOOOO good. The chicken was kicking around in my stomach for a while but the potato salad digested pretty quickly!

60 more miles than I did today I only got 40 on the gravel bike. I liked the NC Bar B Q when I visited OBX a few years back.

I got in 100 minutes on a beautiful, but windy day. It rained all day yesterday leaving a lot of water on the roads today.

It was fun dodging puddles on my new Trek FX 3.
