Been a rough few years. Left knee replaced 8 years ago, broken back 7 years ago. Heel spur removed on my right heel, it was destroying my achilles tendon, that too repaired just over 2 years ago. Then barely out of the boot, severely sprained my left ankle... Just as strong as my body lets me. Been a rough few years... I'm lucky to be walking, let alone wanting to do anything else.

I have hit a large milestone. After fairly slow loss the past month, and less than a pound gain last week, yesterday I was down 4 pounds! The milestone is, I am down 101 pounds from my heaviest! 79 since my surgery in October 2018. 277.4.

The shirt was from a 5k run I participated in while my ship was in Jebel Ali 22 years ago. It is an XL. Considering last May I was close to needing 5x shirts... 2xlt is a great fit right now.

I have a couple short term goals for weight. I have a friend that weighs 265. I think I need to make him sweat a bit. Second goal, is only 9 pounds down at 256. 256 makes 100 pounds since surgery. But it is also the lowest I got after breaking my back. It was pretty much 7 years ago next month I believe. After that... I have another friend weighs 230. I'll think about that one.

I have seen my orthopedic about my bad ankle, nothing broken or grossly out of place. Just really bad osteoarthritis And have started physical therapy to strengthen it and try and get some range of motion back into the arthritic ankle.

Slow barely describes things. Last post was 277.4, the following week I made it to 80 pounds lost since surgery, at 276. Last week was a 2 pound gain for 278.4. But today, down 4 to 274.2. I know some get upset when their weight loss slows down. But I keep seeing enough changes to keep me happy. For instance, I needed a new belt at the end of January, perhaps I should have bought another size smaller, as I already reached the lowest holes, and have now punched 4 new holes in it. I've had t buy new shorts for the gym, couldn't tie my old ones tight enough to stay up anymore... In the cardiac rehab gym, doing some leg extensions, the technician monitoring us asked when my quads started showing back up... Made me look and yes, not picture worthy, but things keep changing. I have been having issues with my CPAP pressure, making me ears "pop" at night frequently. I'm at a constant pressure of 18cmH2O. I asked my sleep doc if he could lower my pressure. Reviewing my machine stats, he agreed, and now I'm almost a month into an automatic setting of 10 to 18... I'm quite a bit happier with that. And still feel good. Saw my Cardiologist 1 March. She was quite pleased, and while I need a coronary calcium scan, she doesn't need to see me for a year now... Unless I need to see her. Overall, my BP is consistently lower, lowest so far was 95/58 but I wasn't dizzy or light headed My resting heart rate is back in the 60s, even some in the 50s. Did I mention that I can BREATHE so much easier now?

My daughter wants to go for a bike ride next weekend. Weather might be agreeable, but how can I say no to ride bikes with my little girl? OK, she is well into adulthood, but still... Not taking my KHS off the trainer yet, so scrambling to prep my 29er. Needs new brake pads for the disc. I hope her hybrid is in good shape.

Daughter and I had a good ride. Her first more than a mile in years. She had a blast all the same, and was surprised we went nearly 6 miles. We plan to ride together more, despite living 40 miles apart...

29er is still fun to ride, able to go faster than I expected, or need to go. But since I've been away from riding until recently, it is confidence building. Looking forward to more warm weather coming.

Down a mere .2 pound this week. But not upset at a all. Changed my workout routines a bit. Didn't get in any swimming. Just sticking with my food plan, and I'll reach my shorter term goals.

271.6, or, down 1.4 pounds this week. Despite a trip to Cheesecake Factory the nght before weigh in. To that score, I had the Mexican chicken Lettuce Tacos, for 220 cal... Though, I did steal a cople fries from the grandkids...

Saturday, even after my hour plus in the cardiac rehab gym and cardio work, I stole 10 minutes on the bike on the trainer.I managed an average 20mph for the 10 minutes, that is a big improvement over my usual 13mph avearage. I also spun at 100 for over a minute, including a few second burst to 128 for an effective 42.9mph, according to my Wahoo Blue sensors. NO WAY, could I do that outside, my fears would kick in before 20 I think. Bike has a compact crankset, 50-34, and 11-27 cassette.

Just for giggles, I did try a 11-36 cassette with a generic road link added. No possible way to use the big-big crosschain, and I could not shift to the 11 cog. I switched it back to the 11-27 anyway. I will keep that as an otpion for another day.

Back to my weight. Honestly, I feel better than I have for a few years. My left anle, after seeing my orthopedic, has nothing broken or terribly out of place, I just let the muscles atrophy after the initial sprain 2 years ago. I am happy to say, after a month of Physical Therapy, it is doing better, doesn't appear nearly as collapsed as it had been. It is full of arthritis, and will probably always have some pain. My right knee has had another round of the gel injections and feels better mostly. Though I cannot get to zero extension, or truly straight.

As I said, feeling better, I have caught myself taking stairs 2 at a time. Weird. Haven't done that since my back injury over 7 years ago. And on THAT subject. I finally got off the muscle relaxers I've been on for the last 7 1/2 years. Doing ok so far. But I do feel the muscles in my back a bit unhappy. But not painful...

OK. More riding under my belt. More to do.

I picked up a different toy.

1992 Trek 1400. I don't intend to do too much to it, but someone stuck a 9 speed cassette on it, it is a 7 speed drivetrain...

Not that I needed another ride, but yeah, I did...

No one needs another bike but N+1 strikes, I'm over 10 bikes and almost got another one last month.

I have the Redhead out today. Visiting my wife in the hospital, then planning a 10 mile ride or so before going home...

This morning the scale and I got along... 269. Down 2 from last week. Down a total of 109 from my heaviest, 87 since my surgery in Oct. I have my 6 month checkup on thec16th, anotherc3 would be nice! But I am already very happy so far.

I took the Redhead out 2 weeks ago, and a couple times since, also been out on my 29er. Including a ride with grandkids last weekend. Oldest grandson needed a bigger bike, so I got one to take him next visit...

Last month I was happy when my cardiologist didn't need to see for a year. She did have me get a Coronary Calcium scan which I got last week. The results were a pleasant surprise. No statin meds required, as I got a perfect ZERO score. Coupled with my echocardiogram test before surgery, showing my Ejection Fraction at 68%, I'm in pretty good heart health!

True. No one needs N+1, but....

2006 Cannondale CAAD8 started life as a R1000, but was stripped to donate to a carbon bike and never ridden. Got the frame and fork for $50, DT Swiss Giant Edition wheelset for $75. Most of the rest were a gift from a friend. Never owned a sub 20 pound bike, and this will be quite a bit less, perhaps under 18 when complete. So, this N+1 is a reward for me to work towards. I think 240 is a fair point to set. Though that goal might be amended if I wish. But certainly under 250.

And presently I am 265. Been a very slow month. Despite increased activity level, and miles and more exercise.

But hey. I'm down 113 from my heaviest of 378 just a year ago. 91 since my surgery last October. I feel so much better. Breathe easier. No BP meds. A1C, cholesterol and blood sugar levels in normal ranges. I sleep better, had my CPAP pressure lowered recently and results are good enough to warrant a new sleep study. I may not need it my CPAP. I have energy again...

Ok. I still have a failing right knee. But it is more manageable. I had physical therapy for my bad left ankle, and it is improved. And no longer in danger of having that joint fused. I still have gout and non-diabetic neuropathy in my feet.

But I feel better overall... hard to argue that point.

It's a good day. My scale and I might be on friendly terms again. 263. This is 115 in just over a year lost. 93 since October.

While my only ride today was at the gym,

Used my Wahoo Tickr HRM today. I also had 30 minutes on the elliptical machine, some weights and 20 minutes easy swimming. I'm planning to add the Wahoo Cadence sensor, can be used on my shoe for treadmill or elliptical workouts...

I'm happy to work my heart in ranges that a year ago, I felt like it was coming out of my chest. And I can BREATHE...

Heaviest weight 378
Current weight 263
Goal weight HEALTHY!
Ok, short goal 256. That is 100 pounds lost since surgery, and the lowest I've weighed in 17 years.
Next goal is 240. What I weighed when I retired from the Navy 18 years ago.
After that, I will re-evaluate... But that poi t is much closer than I ever dreamed possible just a year ago.

Zjrog wonderful to follow your weight loss story. Like you when I started my weight loss journey this time I was at a loss as to where I was going. I finally decided that a BMI of 18 to 24 was where I was going. Started at 282lbs and am down to 260lbs. I use Myfitnesspal food diary to control caloric intake. Unlike you I have a hereditary high blood pressure gene and my blood pressure is very hard to control. But it does go down with weight loss. I've done this one time before and hit a wall at 220lbs and never got below it. My BMI was still above 24 that time so I believe I am going to be between 200lbs and 215lbs or so before hitting goal. I took less blood pressure medicine but never got rid of it completely. This time I'm ready for the hard part at 220lb and will find a way to work through it. I've always had a recumbent around for the times when an injury keeps me from riding an upright bicycle. The recumbent is awesome on long rides because a proper set up one just does not hurt you in any way. I find the recumbent is no more prone to auto bicycle interactions than any other bicycle. However looking back is more of an issue and I'm very careful when pulling out into traffic because of the looking back issue. N+1 is an ever present hoarder instinct that must be resisted. I haven't bought a new to me bicycle in less than a year and haven't gotten rid of any bicycles in several years so I am up one or two but I'm in control. Keep up the good work.

@tallbikeman, I keep thinking a recumbent trike is in my future, but that is certainly is a future plan... I'm certainly hoping to keep injuries at a minimum for a change.

I'm a terrible example of a bike hoarder. Years ago, I had a rotating collection that was in excess of 20... I kept only 1 of that collection, my 1986 KHS Fiero. It was my first real adult bike. And is probably staying forever. Yes, I've gathered a couple bikes lately. But no real plans for any more bikes. I did donate a MTB tht was too small to the bike collective the other day. And the Schwinn hybrid my daughter has been using is coming home, I hope to see if my grand daughter can use it. She is quite tall for a 9 year old. If it doesn't fit, it will before long! Daughter wanted a roadbike, and I helped her find one. She is in LOVE with it, a 1998 Schwinn Passage aluminum frame, 3x7 RSX drivetrain.

Thanks brotherman!!! It has been a tough journey. I hated needing BP meds, Glad I'm off them now. BP yesterday morning was actually low. 94/53 HR 61... I've checked my home wrist cuff against a home health nurse's professional cuff. Close enough for me. And, bluetooth enabled. I would say the best shape of my life was in the 225 to 230 range, but that was 25 years ago.

Originally I was the scrawny kid. Weighed 150 to 155 from age 13 to almost 21. I had 28xl pants issued in Navy bootcamp, and they needed a belt. I got married, and the weight climbed slowly, but held at 225-230 for several years. I hot 240 though as I retired from the Navy, 18 years ago. Then, it was off the charts... Yeah. I more than doubled my weight over the years... At the present time, I can't imagine being under 200. Last 2 times I was, I wasn't comfortable in my skin. It just wasn't right... SO, we will see after I get to 240...

About gummed shifters: it might be possible to get them back with a liberal flushing with WD-40.

I have a different thread on that. It's funny, I used a solvent that didn't do squat, yet once it got warm outside, I removed the brifters and soaked them in WD40, then left them in the sun for a good while. Then soaked again and finally got them free... So they will go back on the Cannondale R200 soon. I did still get the 3400 Sora brifters. Cheap and I'll just hold onto them for a while...

But for now, the CAAD8 awaits my attention...

I finally broke out of the 260s! Been stuck on that 10 pound loop since 31 March... But the trend was always down. I dropped another pant size, and tightened my belt 2 notches!

I'm retired Navy, 1981 to 2001. I felt like a sausage in it's casing in Feb... Didn't need to suck it in the other day. Yea! The flight suit was a goal...

256 is my immediate goal. That is 100 pounds lost since surgery in October. And, the lowest I weighed after breaking my back nearly 8 years ago. Next goal, 240. And my 2006 Cannondale CAAD8 reward. I weighed about 240 when I retired 18 years ago.

This has been a dead past week for exercise. Thought I had a rash, but no. Nope. SHINGLES! Never knew that included the muscle tissue all the way to the bone, for pain. Left hip, from my "junk" to my crack... Yeah. Feels like I got hit by a bus... Doc gave me meds, scheduled me for the vaccine after I heal... Today is the best the deep tissue has felt in 10 days...

Decided to weigh my bikes today. Well. The ones here. My 98 Cannondale minus wheels, shifters, chain, cables and bar tape was 12lb 6oz. My 2006 Cannondale CAAD8 in the same state, 9lb 1oz. With all but cables and tape, is 17lbs even. WIN! My 1986 KHS Fiero rolls in atv25lb 15oz, more than a pound and a half less than expected. My Performance Access Xcl 9r was 31lb 3oz, nearly 2 pounds more than I thought. The 92 trek 1400 is in my son in laws hands, so no idea on weight. But guessing 23 or so.

Why weigh the bikes? I was curious. No other reason.

I have not ridden these past 2 weeks. Shingles suck... Feels like I got hit by a bus... But feeling better today. Finally.

After that months long stall, I am pleased to say I'm down another pound. 258. 120 pounds lost from my heaviest. 98 since surgery.

My continued PSA about Shingles. Get the vaccine if you had Chocken Pox as a kid. I'm 17 or so days into this. Healing. But itchy skin now. The deep tissue and joint pain is mostly gone now.

I got a few miles on the bike, but had issues. Rash in the crotch was ok but there. My big issue was my rear brake isn't stopping me. On my 29er, Avid BB5 disc brake, 6 month or less pads. Since my area of town is all hills, I had to call it quits...

I'm having a tough time NOT finishing my CAAD8. Knowing it is under 18 pounds is certainly bugging me...

Excellent seeing the weight loss. I started on March 7th at 282lbs and just hit 256 yesterday. I have been stuck a couple of times but I keep adhering to my food diary (myfitnesspal) and try to remember accurately all the food and exercise. I actually had to downrate the calorie burn from exercising because I was not losing weight and my food diary was accurate. That was a bummer because I went from old man strong guy to old man. However I ride almost every day and try to do a 10mile ride once a day along with long walks. I recently suffered a bout of prostatitis brought on by lowering my handlebars on my bikes and not adjusting the seat angle to match. At the same time I started taking a drug designed to allow better urination called flomax. This drug caused my undercarriage to become sensitive to pressure and this started the prostatitis. The pain and ill feelings associated with the bruising of the taint area was excruciating. This went on for a week and a half before it cleared up. I realized early on that my bicycle seat horn was causing this issue and stopped riding my upright bicycles. I have since changed over to hornless bicycle seats. The best one so far is the Spongy Wonder seat from Canada. It is pretty good and I am riding it regularly. Hornless seats are weird to ride at first but do not touch anything and that is a great feeling in and of itself. I'm sorry to hear about your shingles. My wife went through a bout of this about 20 yrs ago and it was pretty bad. It is a form of chicken pox as I recall that we get because our chicken pox vaccination from childhood is no longer adequate. Ah the wonders of growing old. I wish you a rapid recovery from shingles. My wife and I both got a chicken pox booster shot given to older folks just so they don't get this. My blood pressure is slowly going down as I lose weight. I'm at 140/80 or so and taking 4 drugs trying to control it. I'm committed to losing much more weight because of all the medication I take. I'm mystified as to why I let myself get so heavy but have a positive attitude going forward. Keep up the good work. Keep riding and exercising. Love your posting and your positive attitude.

@tallbikeman, last year, the 22 pounds I lost before surgery was difficult. I was not able to get much exercise in. I was very angry at myself for letting myself get in that shape. And then I got the heart news. I was headed for trouble. And then the sleep study showed I had severe obstructive sleep apnea, and that CPAP machine saved my life. Being able to sleep again, took a lot of stress off my heart. Which, let me get some exercise. And the cardiologist put me in her cardiac rehab gym program. Yes, with the guys that had already had heart attacks and surgeries.

My BP was higher than yours is currently. I was SHOCKED they took me off BP meds the day I had surgery. But I am regularly in the 110/70 range. I have had a 98/53 with a 68 heart rate... Hard to believe the changes in the past year...

I'm not great at journaling, but my nutritionist did require me to chart food with myfitnesspal as well. And she wanted me to be specific, if I had a sandwich, I had to chart 2 slices of the bread, amount of meat, cheese, condiment and any veg. AND BRANDS... And had to print them weekly to send her. I cut out all soda 3 months before surgery. I do drink brewed iced tea, unsweetened. Not tea from a soda fountain. I drink at least 64 ounces of water a day. (I work in the desert, hydration is life!!)

I was frustrated yesterday with my ride. The rash in my unmentionable area was manageable, but the bike rear brake failing was a safety issue to me. I wish there were more hours in my day, to ride. But the employment thing is an obstacle... I need to get a bike back on the trainer...

Thank you sir for the kind words!!! Good luck!

Could be to do with worries about bleeding out while under the knife
