Maybe marketing in the comparison of Eroica to Cino? That and the monkey see, monkey do effect? "Gotta do it 'cause everyone else is."
All I can say is that this Cino ride really sounds like a great time, and this is from a guy that doesn't do group rides. When I see the volume of people in photos from Eroica, long lines waiting for stuff, no thanks.
But Cino seems like much more fun from what I've gathered here. I have seriously considered trying to make this happen, but the logistics and cost are just too much for me at this time. It would be fun to meet the rest of the C&V crowd there.

In Wisconsin, the HHH was the first challenge ride (10,000 climbing in 100 miles) in the driftless area. Horrible rest stops. Cyclists are hammerheads just looking for a personal best. Sells out every year. I think they are on a lottery system. Stu, not much liking the attitude of the cyclists and horrible rest stops, starts the DD as an alternative challenge ride in the driftless area. Makes a great atmosphere and rest stops. Never sold out, ever.
Cino I think limits to 150, but I doubt they would get much more than that. Eroica CA, while doesn't sell out, certainly flirts with 1000 riders who are continually wringing their hands about gearing, what to wear, what bike to ride, covid, you name it.
So why do the crappy rides do well and the good rides do crappy?

Cino draws me in precisely because it is small and remote, it attracts GREAT people, has amazing food, a challenging route and a funky laid back atmosphere that never takes itself too seriously..
Careful though, ride it once and you're likely to find yourself plotting to come back next year where it will feel more like a family reunion.

I know it would be more Cino if I rode my bike from Oregon to Montana, but I will probably opt to drive my still-pretty-Cino beat up 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, 5-speed manual tranny (the auto world equivalent of friction shifting?). I could probably pick up any (limit one) stray maniacs on-route. But my time is flexible—I've got plenty of it, so those constrained by work commitments may have a less leisurely schedule, and therefore wouldn't work for them.

I just checked and Southwest currently offers a decent under $400 round trip from NH to Spokane, WA. My issue would be that my only current bike which is easily packable and fits in a suitcase as checked luggage is this;

I'd need to swap out the SPD pedals for cages and straps!I wish I could come this year. But that weekend is about a month before I retire and I doubt the church members would let me take the weekend off!

Got all the parts in or on order.....may not end up as super clean and elegant (mix of 105, deore, rx100, mega range) as I would like (anyone have aluminium 175 triple crankset ?) but will end up with 52-42-30 and 13-34 gearing

Yea, Eric Greenberg (the guy in the red jersey on the right). Usually is the 1st one to Hot Springs.

I remember riding next to Ross - that was a challenging year for him, but he made it! I think that was also the year it rained, so he was perfectly equipped with fenders!! The next year he rode, wait for it... a Ross!

Take this to heart. The first time that I rode Cino I lost 3 chainring bolts on the first day.....and that was on a bike that had at least 100 miles on BLM roads so it had seen roughness. Thankfully Spokane Dave had a bunch of spare parts and I was able to find some new bolts.

They're 50.4 bcd cranks so you can go as low as 26 on the inside. TA and the stronglight 49d also are 50.4 bcd cranks.
They're used so you need to find a parts donor, eBay, or put up a WTB on the C&V for sale forum. They're great cranks if you want to run a "compact" double on a vintag bike.

Oh yeah I forgot about those. Those are in nice shape I like the relief pattern.
You're right only took half an hour found a couple candidates but also discovered I can buy new even a bb to fit my Italian bb from TA direct.
Would like an old crank but will go new to get my cr combo and may cave and buy new arms if I decide I really want 172.5.
