You can change out just the arm, but the chainline may be affecterd, depending the new model selected. Unfortunately, it's hard the predict the result and is pretty much trial and error. However, there is one more possibility. Shimano did sell adapters that allowed the Dyna-Drive cranks to accept 1" pedals. I haven't seen them in years but then again, I haven't gone looking for them. Maybe Ebay?

I actually believe your bicycle is a 1981 model as the serial number is from relatively early in 1981. Dyna-Drive goes back to 1980 and Deore goes back to 1981, so it is a possibility. The previous owner may have bought it in 1982.

Just bought a Shogun frame off craigslist to replace my damaged '74 Raleigh frame . Can anyone help me identify what I have?

Serial number is M1E28082

No decals except SHOGUN on both sides of the downtube in gold and white block letters. Very nice red and white pinstripes on the top tube and fork which appear to be painted on. Black frame, red on the front of the head tube. Headbadge missing, old rusted rivet heads on the side of the head tube. Shimano 600 arabesque DT shifters, derailers, crank. and clamp-on cable guides. Red cable housings. Maruishi stem, WINPISTA bars, Diacompe suicide brakes and foam grips. C-Star (?) rear brake.

It was cheap because it's been out in the weather and lots of parts are seized up. I have everything off but the stem, seatpost, and driveside BB cup. Time for professional help. Nice frame for $40, though.

I'm going to look at a 400 on Saturday, a 27" frame. May have it share commuting duties with my 63cm Lotus, might go fixie (no bits will be ground down, nothing powdercoated & all the parts stored away)
If I get it - more than likely - will add its number to the list

Just to muddy the water some,in 1978,Shogun would custom make a bike if you wanted.I went to school with a fellow who's family owned a bike shop.He had me come in,took measurements,and had the bike made to fit me.I had my choice of colors,tubing,headbadge,stickers,components,anything that was available at the time.So you can run into all kinds of stuff on the same year bike.

For the record,mine was made in 1978 and has serial #5261.You can see that the customs had a "funny" serial number.The bike cost almost $500 in 1978,a Varsity was around $60/$70 IIRC.

Mine came with 531 tube set,SR touring triple crank(110/74),seat post,stem,and pedals.Avocet leather saddle,tires.Shimano 600 F/R derailers,6 speed freewheel,hubs,brake levers,brakes,DT shifters.Araya box rims.

This bike has served me well,ridden everyday,rain,shine,snow,commuting,touring(what it was built for) for 30 years and well over 200,000 miles and still going strong.I hope the frame never gives out,or a grown man is going to cry!

Booger1, That is very interesting info on the custom build possibilities. I thought they were all Tange steel. I bought mine from Joselyn's Bike Shop in Monterey Ca. in 1979. Peter had just taken over from his father Les as I recall, and he was very excited about the addition of the Shogun Line to his Raleighs, Nishikis, etc. The shop is still in business at a different location and a great LBS!

I just bought a Shogun off Craigslist last week. The frame has some spots of rust I'm going to buff off with brass wool and retouch, and the brakes are pretty shot, although the drivetrain is rideable. It's all Shimano Tourney. My plan is to strip the whole thing down to the frame and rebuild, hopefully with used Campy parts -- I'm thinking Centaur if I can afford it (some questions on that below). It's gonna be my first road bike and my first substantial mechanical project. I'm taking a "Park Tool School" class in Jan-Feb of next year, and hopefully the two experiences will be mutually beneficial.

I'll post my serial # tomorrow, and I'd be very grateful if anyone can tell me more about what I've got. The seller described it as 70's vintage; I have the scrolly "Japan" sticker down near the BB; I have a sticker reading "Tange Champion #5 seamless chromoly" and no fine print limiting it to the seat tube or what have you; and I have the little (aluminum?) headbadge with the Shogun's face on it in relief; and I have stem-mounted shifters. Oh, and I have silly suicide levers that don't actually work, LOL.

My biggest question is this: Can anyone tell me what to expect regarding the handedness of the threading on the bottom bracket shell? I've been reading things like this table and worrying that if my threads are all locked up I'm not going to know which way to go to loosen, and I'll just jam my threads even worse. Did Shogun consistently stick to a given BB shell threading scheme in its vintage bikes? Thanks!

If my serial # decoding is correct (using TMar's info), your frame was mfg'd in July of 1982 (second position year, third the month). PGMikeT

I've added a 600 arabesque crankset with unusual triple chainring setup (52-46-39) to replace the Takagi (52-42) and updated the BB to a Shimano cartridge. Also, Changed out the Tourney brakes for 600 arabesque. I'm attempting to restore my 600 arabesque brake levers (I've had a couple of spills over the years!) and using some 105 Golden Arrows in the meantime.

i may have solved the mystery of my bike! mine has same # grouping m3e36413, shimano 600 arabesque all around, red sparkley color as got2run, japan sticker at bottom of seat tube. only problem is all other decals and head badge are missing. holes for head badge are about 1-3/16 apart c-c. does this correlate with anyone elses? also its hard to tell if the seat stays are concave where they meet the seat tube like they are on mine in the pics, and my fork lugs have 2 crown points which i cant see on the others. wish i had that head badge cuz they look awesome!

ok, upon seeing that i was only on page 1 of the thread, now i see that others have a single point crown on fork lugs. maybe not a shogun?

I recently picked up a Shogun 400, serial # M8A01073. It has Shimano 400 derailers and Shimano Tourney brakes. There is a "Japan" sticker near the BB. I'm estimating that its from the early 1980's, but if anyone has a more exact guess, I'd love to know. For now, I'm just trying to undo its previous abuse (e.g. rust, hockey tape on handlebars, etc).

Shogun bicycles had a name for themselves - which in all languages roughly translates to 'It Won't Go.' Though nothing can really explain why, these bikes felt like someone was pushing you backwards. They just didn't want to go fast. I don't know if they were just giving the impression of being slow. Or if they really were slow. But they sure felt this way. Many of those came through my shop in the 1980's, and all the owners complained about this phenomena. So I took apart a lot of Shoguns - virtually everyone's in town. I couldn't find a reason for this - but I don't doubt it when 20-something people tell you the same thing.

Just took mine out to test and this statement seems to be utterly false. Maybe mine's just better than those other people's.

My Shogun 600 has a serial number of M3M06341. Full Shimano 105 Golden Arrow group set. All components are date coded HJ but the levers, which are HK. According to Vintage-Trek.com, that's October and November of '83. It has a "Made in Japan" decal on the seat tube just above the bottom bracket shell. Oddly enough, I ran into the same decal on a Miyata post here on BF just yesterday. Also has a Tange 900 decal on the seat tube. Shimano braze-ons and dropouts.

Any chance these were made by Miyata? I don't know if the serial matches their format, but that Japan decal is perplexing...

Although I just turned 55, and have gone to riser bars, I wouldn't trade mine for anything! (under 4 figures that is, c'mon!) No, really it's 30 years and 1000's of miles old and just gets better. Last week on ebay I actually found a new cassette for the 1979 Shimano uniglide hub and cogs. I just used my spacers, 3 screws and it is amazing. PGMikeT

New to forum
I just got a Shogun and need some info. The serial number is S9P0072. The tubing type decal is faded bad and can not be read. Can anyone help identify the year and if the frame is chrome moly? The components are a little funky. The brakes are Tourney, the front and rear derailleurs are Altus. I thought Altus was a MB part? The crank is a Takagi. The shifters (Shimano) look to be mounted on the handlebar stem (they were removed). The cable guides are all clamped on. The levers are Shimano Dee 50 and the handle bars are ALP Champion. The stem is Ace.
