Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oakley glasses with clear-to-black transitions lenses so that I go out for a ride early in the dark and not need to carry a second set of glasses for when the sun comes up.
Perfect.

Some bad gifts are more amusing than disgusting. Two years ago I got a "tool kit" that consisted of a belt pouch, a screwdriver, and an adjustable wrench that clearly came from the dollar store (i.e. -the entire kit was $1). The giver of the gift knows I have a well stocked tool box with quality tools -- in fact he has used it many times. And his net worth is somewhere between $2 and $4 million.

I still have the tools. I'm not sure what to do with them. I think anyone who tried to actually use them might hurt themselves. And yet I haven't been able to throw them out.

Full disclosure, the same person also gave me $50 in a card...so it's hard to figure out wtf was the deal with the tool kit.

Definitely not fredly. Mind you, you'll probably only use it once or twice a season, if that, but you'll be glad you have it.

wow, I don't see why everybody is going off on the OP...clearly its a crappy gift. My girlfriend was smart enough to ask me what i NEEDED or WANTED, rather than risking WASTING money on a gift that will just sit. I myself am a generous gift giver and rarely ask for anything simply because I can afford what i want or need. I like to give gifts that I know somebody needs and will use regularly. If I can't think of a gift that suits that criteria I simply won't give you anything at all...I'd rather take you out to dinner or help you move some furniture...whatever.

Some people should lighten up, sounds like a bunch of bad gift givers throwing stones.

Torx bolts are supposed to phase out hex/allen on bikes, who knows when though. They strip less, and allow more torque using smaller bolt heads, giving a slightly larger clearance for tools. A few mechanics told me to expect torx to become more widely used soon when I worked at a shop.

Seriously what decent person would ever open a gift (a gift from a caring family member mind you), and even have the slightest hint of an emotion that would resemble disgust (much less to take the time to take a picture of it and post it on a public web site). That family member would be deeply hurt if they ever read this post.

I hope this thread caused the OP to look in the mirror a little. The only thing that caused me any disgust this Christmas week was the OP's original post.

I got some nice hemp work "cycling" gloves for Christmas this year from my grand mother. It was an awesome gesture because she has a million children to shop for, but I had the opportunity to ask my brother for some Specialized BG Fit gloves, which I will use for next season.

If someone cares enough to think about what I like to do, and give me even the most ridiculous (in cycling parlance, Fredly) gift, I will gladly accept it and will put it to use, somehow. Says a lot that folks are interested enough in you to try and find something that fits with the activity or interest that gives you joy. Lots more personal than a wad of cash.

I've just become more sentimental as my kids get older (23 and 19). If I got a Fredly gift from one of them, I'd put it to use proudly.

Now I'm confused. I thought you were screwing around -- this is serious? It's really bad karma not to appreciate good thoughts even if they take misdirected forms.

It takes a long time for family and friends to grok this stuff. Over time, mine have come to appreciate that I spend a fortune on my habit and am very particular about certain details. But I appreciate all efforts and even newbies to the game can come up with decent ideas -- one of my young nephews picked out a chamois to wipe down my racing bike so it would be pretty. Score!

Why take it cycling? That looks like a hiking pack to me when a backpack would be overkill. In any case, it can be lent out to people who'd like to use it.
