Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mystery part arrived with new frameset

I picked up a Scattante XRL Team frameset to build for the Mrs. and there are these two pieces I have no idea what they are for. Came inside the box with headset and replacement rear derailleur hanger.

I am guessing here, but since they are a pair and the size looks right...and since I am a geezer, maybe these are to mount down-tube shifters into the cable guides if you are so inclined??

No, I don't think so. Too big to fit in there I think

I have to say that I'm stumped. I have two road bikes and a mountain bike and neither of them has anything like that. I can only guess that it's some kind of spacer or (if it's big enough) possibly a vibration damper. It's not clear how big it is.

Try to find a place on the frame with a matching bolt hole and a matching shape for the wide part.

Does the bolt in the packet stick out of the other end of the "thing" if you screw it in all the way?

You may have to bite the bullet and call Performance. Although I suspect their customer service folks know less about bikes than we do.

Some guy in China dropped them in there just to make you start this thread....and he's still laughing about it with all of his friends!

I'd ask a Performance mechanic. They put these together and if it's normally in there, they would have seen it by now. Please let us know what you find out.

Maybe its not supposed to be there. I ordered a Scatt XRL frameset several years ago. I got some touch-up paint, an extra derailleur hanger, but I didn't get anything like that.

Looks like it could go into the ferrules in the frame for cable housing. Perhaps included if you wanted to make it a single speed, or use Di2, so water wouldn't get in to the frame.

Those look like they should be bonded into the end of the seat stays so they can be bolted to the chain stays.

Are there any holes near the rear dropouts where they might be epoxied in? They look like they could be glue on eyelets for mounting a rack or fenders.

Yeah, you are right, although I don't know what I would do if I had to replace those. It would probably be easier to just buy a new frame

^^^ I don't think they were supposed to be in the box.
