Question about recovery. I have started to throw a couple longer rides into the mix and I am noticing that after the longer rides my legs feel weak for days after. More specifically my quads feel weak, and only when I ride my bike. I did 50 miles on wed, took yesterday off and rode again today, and just didn’t feel the power that I usually feel. My quads felt fatigued. This is puzzling because when I do shorter rides 20 to 30 I’m usually cranking really hard, trying to go as fast I can vs the longer rides where I’m taking it easy.
Anything I can do to speed up the recovery time? I try to eat a lot of protein, but I’m currently not using any supplements.

Recovery takes longer as we age. Which, BTW, is probably one of the reasons why dopers love HGH (human growth hormone) which naturally decreases with age. HGH probably does improve recovery. I don't recommend it, of course. It's dangerous. But it works. Sad!
You may want to try "active recovery" do a zone 1 ride for 30-60 minutes the day AFTER a hard ride. Or accept that you should only do two really hard rides/week.

This is just normal, but these longer rides are driving major adaptations in your body. Keep it up, do PT rolling, eat right, get your sleep, cut down on alcohol, do mobility work, and all the other stuff that isn't fun.
I need to practice what I preach tonight 143TSS today between swimming and cycling. Even if those zones aren't correct, it's a bunch more than usual. And I have a 90 minute run tomorrow.

Well, the working title is something along the lines of, "What the hell did I decide to put myself through this for?" But my advisor didn't like that so much.
In the end it will formally be titled, "Polio virus: A Retrospective Study of the Polio Eradication Program in Pakistan."

Good to see you, Jadesfire.

As said, you're going through a huge acclimation point in your cycling, and your desire is going to far outweigh your ability for a little while. I firmly doubt the intensity you're at is going to grind you down, so I wouldn't worry about that yet. Just ride your bike, and realize every day need not be a day you set a personal record.

Are you getting a good slug of protein, with some sugar to stimulate insulin, soon after those long workouts?

Appreciate the above advice, Getting old sucks.
Today I drank chocolate milk after my ride, and after the 50 miler I ate a peanut butter honey sandwich. That’s about the extent of it. I was thinking about getting some more whey.

edit: site says $500 for full group with caliper brakes, $700 for hydraulic disc. Not bad. Buy me a set while you are at it?
