Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Anything I can do to speed up the recovery time? I try to eat a lot of protein, but I’m currently not using any supplements.
Can you get younger?

Recovery takes longer as we age. Which, BTW, is probably one of the reasons why dopers love HGH (human growth hormone) which naturally decreases with age. HGH probably does improve recovery. I don't recommend it, of course. It's dangerous. But it works. Sad!

You may want to try "active recovery" do a zone 1 ride for 30-60 minutes the day AFTER a hard ride. Or accept that you should only do two really hard rides/week.

Supplements that work work because of dope. Stay away in general.

This is just normal, but these longer rides are driving major adaptations in your body. Keep it up, do PT rolling, eat right, get your sleep, cut down on alcohol, do mobility work, and all the other stuff that isn't fun.

I need to practice what I preach tonight 143TSS today between swimming and cycling. Even if those zones aren't correct, it's a bunch more than usual. And I have a 90 minute run tomorrow.

I get two recovery days a week, and basically 5 or 6 recovery days every three weeks. Your body needs it, and I relish them like a good meal on a cheat day.

As said, you're going through a huge acclimation point in your cycling, and your desire is going to far outweigh your ability for a little while. I firmly doubt the intensity you're at is going to grind you down, so I wouldn't worry about that yet. Just ride your bike, and realize every day need not be a day you set a personal record.

Merlin is always mentioned. I've never tried them, but prices seem good.

Good advice above.

Are you getting a good slug of protein, with some sugar to stimulate insulin, soon after those long workouts?

Appreciate the above advice, Getting old sucks.

Today I drank chocolate milk after my ride, and after the 50 miler I ate a peanut butter honey sandwich. That’s about the extent of it. I was thinking about getting some more whey.

Try eurobikeparts.com, they are USA based but offer really good prices. Check them now and thank me later.

edit: site says $500 for full group with caliper brakes, $700 for hydraulic disc. Not bad. Buy me a set while you are at it?
