District 4th 2011 Trek how to use the flip flop hub

Hello,

So complete noob question about fixed gear flip flop hub. So when i purchased the bike i was told that if i flip the wheel i could use it as a fixed gear bike. So i was like great i will do that some where down the line. I am at the end of that line and in looking at the wheel, i noticed that it does not have gears on the other size. So i would have to install a gear for the belt to wrap around.

I am unsure of what to buy, and i would like any advice of what to look for. Last time i want to do is go to shop and ask the sells man for "advice" on what i should buy and end up with a whole new bike on accident .

So the question is would be:

What and where should I look for a fixed gear to put on the other side of the wheel?
Do I need a new chain?

Thanks

to run fixed you will need add a cog and lock ring to the other side of you hub. If you keep the same or similar tooth count o the new cog as your freewheel, you will not need a new chain. it looks like you have a 17 tooth (17T) freewheel based on your link.

Best play to pick them up is a your local bike shop unless you want to buy the tools to install them.

for example:

cog:
All-City standard track cogs | Retrogression

Lockring:
'Steel Reserve' stainless steel lockring | Retrogression

If you want to install the cog yourself you will also need a chain whip and a lock ring tool and grease. If you get a 1/8 inch cog you should also get a 1/8 inch chain whip.
