We are planning a short trip to Baltimore from NY, and we were wondering if it would be a good idea to take the bikes with us. Is it bike friendly? Any trails, places to ride you could suggest? Is it easy to tour the city by bike? Thank you in advance.

Hi cycleheimer, Baltimore is great for bikers if you measure against what it was like 10 years ago. If you measure against NYC, probably, not so.
That said, bring the bikes!

There is a lot of downtown harbor area touring you can accomplish safely. Also, you'll find several trail networks- Gwynns Falls and Jones Falls very nice and safe.
If you're up for riding out of the city to check out the environs I recommend it. North of the city you'll find beautiful horse farms. West, hills and historic mills. South is flatter and a combo of farms and suburbs and east is a myriad of rivers and ports.

What kind of cycling are you interested in? Mileage? Speed?

We would just put on some leisurely miles. Weather permitting, what better way to get around than by bike? Thanks for the input G.B.!

If you're interested, shoot me an email when you get into town. I might be able to give you a little Charm city bike tour. I had a fun time riding with another forum rider (from Austin, TX) last fall. It's good to explore a new place aimlessly, but also nice to follow a local. email: bobwag (at) gmail (dot) com
Best

The B&A Trail near BWI Airport runs clear down to Annapolis. Pretty much totally flat. ~20 miles one way I hear. I have only done 10 and back before. Very nice, shaded and flat, ~8 foot wide trail. It connects with the BWI trail, which circles the Baltimore Washington International airport. Nice easy ride. Runs thru wooded areas just parallel to many shops on other side of trees. Even the back side of a mall you will see. Easy access to food and water, bathrooms. The little ranger station is a cool sight. There is even a bike shop you pass the back side of near the 10 mile mark on the left. Here it is:

I will be in annapolis tomorrow. Inlaw lives near the trail and I plan on some easy riding and geocaching on the trail. Are there any trails, singletrack near the main trail?
