Help Wanted!

Hi! I'm going to purchase this fixed gear / SS:

Matte Black 5 Bicycle : Fixie & Fixed Gear Bikes | State Bicycle Co.

Is this a good purchase?

And if I do buy this bike, how should I customize the bike to ride uphill with ease? I read into compact cranks but don't know which to buy.

I don't want to be undergeared for riding and racing in fast bunches.

I could buy a road bike but the minimalistic look of a fixie is more appealing. And the specs on the bike (above) don't seem too bad...

there is a bazillion and one threads about buying a new bike for a moderate price. If you like that bike, then buy it and ride it around. If you are unsure about that bike, spend 5 minutes reading threads on the forum and you'll have at least 5 more options.

For gearing...
being able to go uphill easy, and race fast are not going to be the same gear.. if you really need diversity, then maybe you should get a geared bike?
if you're absolutely sold on getting yourself a "fixie" then i would recommend looking for a flip flop hub so you can flip your tire around to change the gearing for easy hill climbs or "fast racing in groups"

I decided to go with the Mercier Kilo Stripper, but I'm still deciding between the chrome and the matte black.

I read that the stock pedals are terrible, so I'm planning on buying the MKS steam pedals.

I also heard that the saddle and the wheels could be better. Any quick options?

Thanks!

Those pedals are very small. Make sure they'll be OK for your foot before buying. I wanted them, but needed to get the Touring model.

Hey now, I'm 22 (til next week) years old, 160 pounds, born in June, not allergic to shellfish, I know I should get a 55-56 roughly being as I'm just shy of 5'10" with whatever inseam is appropriate for that, and I know better than to get a pure fix or a state...and my first post was in classic and vintage.

I guess I'm just happy to be in the 5%

I bought a State Black Label and although I do like the frame, I am slowly replacing every part it shipped with.

If I could buy again I wish I came here first and asked the same question hundreds of others asked and gotten a:

Possibly there's an opportunity as a freelance first bike purchase adviser...
