pictured from the drive side and showing the serial number on the bottom of the frame (and possible on the bottom of one of the chainstays would help a lot.

It's an early touring frame from mid 1980s.
Steel fork.
They make a pretty good ride from what I hear.
It's missing the shifter bosses, which can be found.

"ST" was the prefix for touring bikes, with the next numbers being the model, based loosly on retail price.
ST400, ST600, ST800
The frames were the same (different paint), with different components.

+1. IIRC the white frame was the ST400. Examine it closely for cracks around the welds. I've seen many with cracked welds around the seat tube/seat stays.

I have spare shifter bosses, and I assume others do too. Cable guides are rare, but non-original replacements are available, so I've heard.
