Giant Boulder ATX w/Suntour X1

Giant has pretty good index on all atx and boulder models, but this one is nowhere to be found. One obscure reference in another post where a person thought is was 1990 model. The red/black spatter would date to right around then as I had two treks (89,90) w/ similar paint schemes.

Anyway this was a freebie that looked rough up front. Obviously needs a wheelset though came with decent shimano front wheel. Listed as doubled butted cromo on sticker and has x1 group including f/r derailer, triple crank and diamcompx1 brakes, sr 6061 seatpost. I have redone bb, headset, cleaned, fixed x1 shifters, etc. Obviously needs rear wheel, assume came with suntour 7 cassette or freewheel? Mix of reviews of trying to run shimano or sram on this x1. I would prefer to find wheelset or rear wheel w/ cassette but if any value in x1 parts would also swap them for something else. I remember the early 90s atx line from Giant, they were a bit heavy but seemed very well built.

I still have this bike and yes it is a 1990 model. It was my 1st MTB and still a favorite. When I bought it I told the salesguy I wanted something "unbreakable" as I am pretty hard on my equipment. The Suntour components were garbage and I have upgraded to Shimano, shifters, deraileur and replaced tires, wheels and brakes. I love how this bike responds on the trail. It was never a racer, but just fun to ride. I'm not saying this is the ideal project bike or commuter, but it is a keeoer for sure.

Do either of you still have this bike and if so do you know what is the seatpost diameter. I have the exact same frame and am in need of a seatpost. I measured between 29.8 and 30.1 with calipers so I'm not sure whether the seatpost is a 29.8, 30.0, or something else.

Hello and welcome to the forums. @dailycommute is still active and may reply. You can always check with your local shop, they should have a tool like this to measure the size. Some members here have this tool, where do you live maybe someone nearby can help

That's the Odyssey Seat Post Sizer, or someone's reproduction of one.

I can't help with the post size but what the OP has is a 1991 model. According to my literature, in 1990 it just the Boulder with Shimano Deore LX. In 1991 it they added the ATX designation and spec'd it with Sun Tour X-1. It was replaced by the Sedona ATX for 1992. The serial number should confirm this and provide the manufacturing date, down to the fortnight. X-1 was 7 speed in 1991.

hey, well it is long gone but I want to say it was a 30.0 post, odd size for sure. I would contact Giant directly as they used to have all the old catalogs online but do not see them listed anymore.

Thanks for the helpful tips everyone. I've emailed Gaint to see if they have the info and if that fails I'll take it to my local shop.

I’m actually running an X1 rear derailleur on my touring road bike with Superbe Pro accushift downtube levers. I would say that the X1 rear derailleur shifts very well when paired with the correct shifters and an Accushift compatible 7 speed freewheel such as the Winner Pro.

Measured what? The post or the inside diameter of the seat tube? If it's the latter, go 0.2mm smaller for the post, to allow for clearance.
