'86 Trek Tri series? (5/700)
How do the Trek Tri-series from '86 compare to the earlier 5 and 610 bikes? I see they go from 43 chain stays to 42.5, and that the fork offset is a little different.
Are the Tri bikes comfortable mile eaters like the X10 series, would they fit 32mm (without fenders/28mm with).
If they are more of a tight clearence race bike then they're not for me, but something more general that would take a saddle roll and maybe a bar bag, for a lunch and a sweater would be awesome.

It looks like it has the same geometry as the Elance models, anyone know what kind of tire/fender clearence those have? And if they can be set up as a country picnic bike?

I know that with Schwinns at least, things started tightening up in the mid 80s. My 1985 Tempo could fit 28s, but my 1986 could only take 25s and that was pretty tight.

That's my impression too, I just seem to remember some 400D and 400T Elances running 32's and I believe the '86 Tri series is just the Elance with 531/tange for the 500 and full 531 in the 700.
Esentually up market sport tour bikes.

Rode a 500 tri for a few years and would do long rides but not really a touring geometry. 28 is the max and I don't think you could even get fenders under that.

I posted some questions about Treks ‘86 Triathlon series but it’s not seeing a lot of attention, so I’m (sorry!) going to do a mini-derail here.
I had an ‘84 610 that I loved for its “medium-ness” livelier than a touring bike, more forgiving than the X60 series. Does your 400 fall into that same lovely middle category?
I’m pretty sure the ‘86 Triathlon 500 and 700 were the same bike as the Elance series but with better tubing, is that correct?
I’d love to find another “middle-ish” bike I could fit 700-32s on, (sans fender) with a saddle role and a bar bag. Something that would carry a jacket and a lunch but was just a little more aggressive than a full boat tourer.

Looking at the Vintage Trek catalog for 86- the "tri" bikes' geometries are the same as the "elance" geometries.
From my recollection of my experience- my 400 Elance could fit 32s, but I didn't try fenders, but I would guess no. It currently is riding 27 x 1 1/8" and won't fit 1 1/4".
I ride it with a rack, I've done grocery duty with it, and running all around with it. I've also taken it on a few day trips- and it's great. It is my most aggressively angled bike- despite the "sport touring" designation and my 78/79 730 being a "racing" bike. The 730 is lighter and more compliant. I feel "faster" on the 730, but my opinion is not to be counted on as I'm not a "go fast" type of guy.
The funny thing is after I've ridden other bikes, and it's been a while since I'd ridden the Elance, I start to think of the Elance as more "stout." (maybe because I know it's lower end bike) But once I get back on the bike, I'm reminded of how lively it is.
