Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I was on GMR recently. So much fog near the shack, could not see a thing so climbing up was actually like going nowhere!

I'd almost bet the second favorite is the switchbacks to the ski lifts on Baldy Rd. I'll be honest though, I don't have many pics of this section.
Know any similar routes closer to town (further west)? Haven't done the ski lift climb yet -- 2,000 feet over 4.5 miles in addition to all the other climbing would be a significant challenge.

Will check it out, but I found hwy 39 rather treacherous with vehicle traffic.

Technically, it's a MUP, not a road, but I like this shot.

There is parking at West Fork and you do need a pass. The lower section is the worst when the OHV park is open and the weather is warm. The best time to ride 39 is when the lower gate is closed to cars. Could be rocks up high or road crews working or snow. But on the right day with the right friends 39 is awesome, either up and back or around to the bottom of the 2 and down 39.

Oh man! Does that bring back some memories...

I was stationed at MCAS El Toro from 1983 to 1991. During that time, I rode my 1984 Lotus Pegasus MTB, several different motorcycles, and drove a 1974 Fiat 124 Spider on that stretch of road.

Thanks!

Have you seen the new generation 124? Comes off the Mazda Miata assembly line, but with an Italian engine.

Yeah, I watched Richard Hammond road test it on "The Grand Tour". ... Or was that "Top Gear"?

Anyway, I file this one under Tribute Cars, alongside the Fiat 500, Volkswagen New Beetle, Mini, and of course the new crop of muscle cars. In other words, under today's regulations, none of these cars bring back the vintage experience. For the money you would spend on a new 124, you could buy a very well restored original. Or even an Alfa Spider Veloce. Or a Triumph TR6. But I'm just so over the whole petrol gearhead thing. I drive a Quest minivan because it has plenty of room for my bikes, and I can camp in it whenever I want.

Please pardon the interruption. Now, back to our normally scheduled program...

I get it. I like to look at them occasionally but not going to spend big bucks on a car. I'm a retired Chevrolet dealer mechanic and I still think about buying an old car to tinker on but the feeling passes and I go for a bike ride instead.
