Thinning the herd. Anyone want free project bikes?

I have too many project bikes, and not enough space or time for them.

"Heresy!" I can hear you mutter. Normally I'd agree, but I haven't done anything with these for years except trip over them and move them out of the way.

So I'm looking to give two stalled projects to people that will actually do something with them.

They're both late 80's / early 90's hybrid bikes.

The first is a Girvin Offroad Climber:

Has the original Suntour XCD shifters, brake levers, derailleurs, and front hub. New brake pads, new grips, new brake and derailleur cables - all parts bin stuff. Rear hub died a messy death when the gear cluster seceded. Cranks and chainring are early 90's Shimano Deore. Brakes are Shimano Exage. Takes 700C wheels. Also has the original suspension stem, I replaced the original disintegrated elastomer bushing with one from a skateboard truck that I cut down to fit.

The second bike is a Raleigh Eclipse:

Has BioPace chaintings and middle of the line Shimano Derailleurs. Bars are not original and have GripShifts on them. Also takes 700C wheels, neither of which I have.

I'm looking to GIVE these away. If you want either (or both) of the bikes, please post your interest here and send me a PM.

NOTE: I'm not interested in shipping these, you'll need to pick them up. I live in the Capital District of New York, and work in Albany. I'll be happy to meet up somewhere and hand them off while commuting, etc..

If I wandered by your yard I would grab that Raleigh, maybe the other one too. But that’s a wander too far!

You will probably have to donate locally. Your post reminded me of advertisements for the Virginia lottery when it was first launched.
@thumpism They hired a very good actress to be "Lady Luck". She was seen walking around Virginia neighborhoods dressed in a fairy costume with dainty slippers and a wand with a star on top. Door to door she went, encouraging citizens to buy lottery tickets, all the while being splashed by cars too close to the gutter and small dogs ripping her stockings. In one episode she ended her neighborhood trek wet, discouraged, and probably dog bitten with the comment - "some days you can't give it away".

Maybe donate them to the Albany Bike Rescue? I'd grab one, but wife will divorce me if I come home within another project.

That “Off-road” is an interesting one. I think Tange Infinity was high end tubing (above /below Prestige?) and the fork is oddly minimally curved for an MTB. That would make a nice project for someone’s kid.

Both are going to be great gravel bikes, and there has to be someone in the area who could help out on these. Good luck with a local finder for these project bikes! Smiles, MH (a bit out of your neighborhood)

I talked to them, they'll take basket case / project bikes, but they prefer bikes that are rideable or repairable. I have three other intact bikes I'm dropping off there.

I can very easily identify with that situation.

The Girvin would be a cool candidate to experiment with the spray.bike stuff....

Tange Infinity tubing is actually pretty far down the pecking order. Basically considered lower end than No 5 but a step up from their mangaloy stuff.

Good BF post on the topic:

Well done!!!!! They totally saved my bacon on my first big bike repair. They’re a great organization.

What? I remember the Lady Luck series of ads but what am I doing in this thread? Where did that mention come from?

Well, as long as I'm here I'll say I'm too far away and those bikes are not my size, but I do happen to have actual, honest-to-gosh new-in-the-bag replacement Flex Stem bumpers in the original Girvin packaging. Four bumpers from hard to soft. Might have a couple of packs. I also have a couple of the Flex Stems in long reach, both 22.2, if I recall correctly.
