hub motor and rim spoke holes

Hi Guys. I am a newbie that is doing a DIY ebike conversion using a Tern A7 Link folding bike. I have no experience doing an ebike conversion.

I want to build a rear wheel with an MXUS XF15 rear motor using my bike's 20 inch rear rim. My bike's 20 inch rim has 28 spoke holes and the MXUS XF15 rear motor has 36 spoke holes. Do I have to get a rim with 36 spoke holes, or can I use my bike's 20 inch rim with 28 spoke holes?

hub motor and rim spokes

Hi unterhausen. Yes I found the Sheldon article interesting and convincing. Instead of going through the trouble of making all the calculations required for spoke size, etc., I think I should simply get a 20 inch rim with 36 spoke holes. Now the next issue would be do I also have to change the front rim and get one with 36 spoke holes.

No need to do anything to the front wheel.

Yeah, rims are relatively cheap. Just get one that matches the hub (although it might limit your selection trying to get 36). Don't need 36 on the non drive wheel though. Plenty of pedal bikes have lower spoke counts on the front - ostensibly for aero but its also taking a lot less of the load.

MXUS XF15 is a much bigger motor than I've tried on a 20" wheel. I've used Q100's, which are about 100mm in diamter. The X15 is 140/145mm. It should fly.

Anyway, a good rim for a folder is is the Sun-RIngle Rhino Lyte . It's twin wall, 36 holes, and eyelets in the holes for strength. I've built three 20" hub wheels using this rim.

This guide is pretty accurate for a 36 hole hub motor.. It helps to have a 2nd one to look at, but the tutorial works.

Very good seller and good spokes

Another good seller if you use 13G spokes.

I've bought the cheaper spokes from China too. Much cruder and you wait for weeks. The two ebay gyys will ship in a day or two.

With the bigger diameter hub, I wonder if you'll have an easier time with the Saphim Strong spokes. The body is 14F, so they will bend easier if you need to get the spokes thru the cross pattern.
