Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'll have to check. I'm not much of a pics type. And I will never stop just for a pic. The whole pic thing will be lots easier once I'm home with a real computer.

A couple of climbs yesterday then the ride of silence. One of the cops escorting us had some words with a guy on a motorcycle. Other than that all went smooth.

Side note, can't wait to install my new power meter. I'm not sure if my rides even count without it.

Entering my b’day long weekend. Yep, in our family it goes on for days. Lemon custard cake ordered. Eating out tonight at the Armadillo Palace. Much better than it sounds. Family at our house tomorrow night for meatballs and spaghetti. Chef SIL invited us to a wine event his company is catering on Saturday night and to a family outing at the catering company on Sunday. I just hope we have time to catch a bite to eat being that busy and all.

I went to college about a mile from my house. In my case, the arrivals home were from high school in MA.

Ugh, speaking of college....now daughter #2 (Junior in HS) has the college bug. She previously wanted to go to Princeton, but now after a visit, thinks the town is too sleepy. Her latest idea is to go to Columbia in NYC. I am trying to get her to see the wisdom of going to Penn State or Pitt or Temple, which are all good schools with good honors programs (that I think she will qualify for), but what 17 year old girl wants advice from her father??

So I taught both of my kids to ride bikes this past weekend. The strategy was to get the younger one doing it first to piss the older one off enough for her to commit to doing it. Worked like a charm.

Also, I got them BMX style BSOs from walmart. Hard to screw those up, hand brakes, single speed, etc...

We were going to do a family ride to the park last night, but that was a bust. I haven't been on my MTB in a while, and my shock needed air and little shock pumps ARE. THE. WORST. The rockshox one I have loses 20psi every time you connect/disconnect it, and if you move the pump just a tiny bit while pumping, loses another 10psi from the hose joints. So 20 minutes of pumping basically made no difference. So I ordered the only floor shock pump I could find from amazon. God awful expensive lezyne digital thing. But it swears 3 pumps to 300psi. We shall see tomorrow when I get it.

Unfortunately, the trails by my house are 10' under water right now

It's interesting.

I grew up in the 1970's and the exposure to the post 1960's "era of love" made me think that over time , there would be less racism, less anti-semitism, less sexism, less hate overall.

I am not sure it has panned out that way. Maybe there is less sexism and maybe a little more acceptance of *****exuality, but overall the amount of hate seems high.

Sad!

Goes in cycles. People get nervous about their social and economic standing and start looking at others funny. Personally, I'm more more and more aware of my own biases and the structural aspects of the "isms" and I think lots of other people are too.

Oh we all have our biases. Some of them may be based on experience and probably most of them are unfair. But we should at least be honest with ourselves that we have biases, and strive to be better humans.
