Bucket List Ride Done!

Well yesterday was an event I have always wanted to do and finally got to check it off my ride bucket list. A donut race. It was a blast. Here is how it works. Your race has a route, then at the checkpoints you stop to eat donuts. Every one you eat has a time bonus that is subtracted from your total time of the race. I did the 50K race. There was 33 competitors in my distance. There were 3 stops to eat on the course. In my age group I was 3rd on overall time and 2nd in the adjusted time for food eaten. Overall I was 4th on time and 3rd adjusted. I was pretty pleased with that for sure. My average speed for the 50K was just under 17mph and normalized power was 247 watts. I was just beat yesterday when I got home, that is a pretty burning ride for me. Was great fun. It started in a town in MN called Luverne. When the race started they even did a lead out through the town for a couple of miles like they do when they start the Tour de France. It was a ton of fun. Next year I am going to win the damn thing though. Below are some pics. You can see the eats were not small...infact they were VERY large. The apple fritter was like having a brick in your stomach then needed to ride another 15 miles to the next stop. that thing hurt! Just wanted to share. If you get the chance you have to do one of these rides. Was so much fun!

My wife and I rode the one in Ohio last year and hope to repeat this year as we’re signed up. They are fun, but I have no intentions of winning it. We just “Tour” and enjoy the time with my brother and his wife. I’ve heard there are similar rides in other areas of the country. Congratulations on the accomplishment and your high finish. Good luck next year!

So wait a minute. It's like a race, but you can improve your time by eating donuts? They would not be adequately prepared for what I could do. I come armed.

yep. In the one I did one doughnut eaten you got 6 minutes off your overall time. The highest eater was 13. 13! I would have puked by the end. He was feeling pretty bad at end and didn’t partake in the bbq and free beer after the race. I think he probably was sick the next day too!

The one in Ohio takes 5 minutes off for each one consumed, but they’re glazed donuts not apple fritters. There are some “large” consumers of donuts in Ohio as well, but the donuts are a little lighter. Some still get sick eating too many. I think my brother told me one year some guy ate somewhere between 20-30 of those glazed donuts. Can’t remember if he kept them down, but was sick.

From the Troy Ohio 2017 Tour de Donut, the top 11 male finishers. I've heard that the winner sometimes has negative time. This guy came close! 17 donuts. Woah!

If you checked the bottom 11 male riders in the 32 miler, you’d probably find my name, along with my brother. I think he may have been slightly faster since he ate 4 donuts and I ate 3. I think we crossed the finish line with almost identical slow times, but we finished, had a great time, no injuries, and nothing broke. All in all a great day. I have no plans to improve on it this year. We do it mainly for fun and the chance to schedule time with family. We all enjoy riding bikes, but none of us have any speed aspirations.

Since I've been working on losing weight, I can't even remember the last time I've eaten a donut. But they do sound good right now.

All I've got to say is, an apple fritter is NOT a doughnut! :-D

But yeah looks like a popular ride, way to go on the 33 miles bud!

The fritter was made by a local legend of a cook I guess. So she wanted to feature her wares at on of the stops. The rest were holed items lol. I probably won’t eat a donut until the event again next year either. They are hard on diets!
