Need a New Low-impact Sport for the Off-Season

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need a New Low-impact Sport for the Off-Season

I need a new sport. It's the off-season. I'll still ride my bike. I will also increase my gym time with strength training and yoga, and I'll swim some (not my favorite). But with a bad back (spinal degeneration and stenosis), I've stopped running and playing competitive badminton (ugh). I can climb a local steep hill (The Incline in Manitou Springs, CO) as long as I walk down slowly and deliberately to reduce impact. However, I need a new sport that's low-impact and preferably outdoors. X-country skiing is possible, but only on weekends, not daily where I live.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

rowing, both indoor (on an erg) and outdoor is an excellent full body workout if done correctly. if you live anywhere near a body of water there is likely a club you can join to get the feel of things.

I think the OP is looking for a sport that lasts longer than 2 mins.

When the weather gets lousy you could always try a elliptical trainer. It works the whole body and certainly keeps the body fit for the bike. If you plant it near a TV you can exercise while watching your favorite show when it snows hard!

Outdoors I can think of bike/run/walk/ski/swim/paddle/row/skate. Some or most may obviously not be practical in the off season. Spinning obviously a possibility but not outdoors.
