Shimano CX50 Cantis , replacing stock brake pads with brake shoes that take inserts
Hi,
I have a set of CX50 cantis on a touring bike.
here are pictures of the stock brake pad type;
Here are the bolt washer and spacer ;
These are a specific brake pad that costs almost as much as a new set of the brakes.
I want to replace it with a shoe type pad system so that I can replace and source the pads easily and cheap.
Has anyone done this ? A complicating issue is that many of the brake shoes I see have flat backs and not the concave shape at the back that helps you toe in the pads.
The higher end CX70 came with shoes that could take replacement pads.
These guys look promising as they have a concave back that might match with the washer on the CX50 pad but I am not sure.

I replaced mine CX-50 shoes with Ultegra pad/holder assemblies. It is a type B fitment in the Shimano compatibility document, but is truly a TYPE A solution for fast pad changes and more options on pads. I tried the salmon colored pads, but went back to the Ultegra pads after tremendous noise and poorer stopping with the salmon colored pads.
The Ultegra slide-in pads are also carried at all the LBS in my area, as are Koolstops..
I also upgraded my wife's Sora sidepulls to Ultegra pads/holders as that brake used the CX-50 style pads.
