ISO: Shimano bottom bracket cup with an o-ring style dust seal

I just discovered that my DA 7400 fixed cup is missing its dust seal. I’m attaching a couple of photos of the adjustable cup for a reference to the style of fixed cup I’m looking for.

Notice that the seal is just slightly smaller in diameter than the cup spindle hole. And it sits in channel between the inner and outer flat surfaces of the cup.

Condition and thread pitch of the cup itself doesn’t matter. I only need it for its dust seal.

• Would prefer to cash out, but trades might be doable too.

ISO a Sturmey-Archer Dynothree rear hub, 36 hole. Doesn't even have to be complete; a shell with the Dyno and the inner bearing raceway would do. Don't need the shifting bits; can pull that out of another hub.

I bought a NOS 165mm Shimano FC-7400 LH crank arm on eBay that I'm going to try out.

165mm is only 5mm shorter than a standard 170mm crank arm: 5mm = 0.197" - that's less than 1/4". Road tar (or dog doodoo) on on the bottom of your shoe!

Over the past 45 years I discovered several bikes that I'd been riding that had mismatched crank arm lengths: 170mm & 172.5mm, 170mm & 175mm. I never noticed the difference!

In 1976 I built myself a lugged frame for 700c wheels with a BB height of almost 12" to use off road with 180mm TA cranks. It made a noticeable difference with 26T x 34T gearing.

Looking for a DuraAce FC-7400 Left Hand crank arm in nice condition. 170mm/172.5mm/175mm OK.

ISO: Long-lever Sturmey-Archer 3-speed shifter from the 1950's. Can be cosmetically rough.

I'm really surprised there hasn't been an explosion of people taking 1970's PX10s and repainting them as tributes to the 1960's variants. The blue and yellow is so much nicer to look at. Exciting.

Is the size of that seal consistent among the fixed cups of different Shimano groups of that era? If so I can probably mail you just a seal.

I’m under the assumption that the seal might be a shared part across Shimano cups of different groups within the era, but I’m in no way certain.

This is the type of problem that’d I’d usually solve with a trip to the co-op. But our co-op is still closed until further in relation to Covid-19.

Here’s a few pics of the seal. I’ll add that it’s approximately 2.5 ml thick at its center. If you have one that looks like it might be a direct replacement, or a suitable substitute, I’d love to give it a go.

I've found that those seals get damaged or destroyed if you don't remove them before fitting a fixed-cup remover tool like the VAR-30 or the Sheldon Brown bolt tool.

Not sure if they're available separately anywhere.

My father aways said to search high and low, what you're looking for is there because I saw it 5 minutes ago.

As a last resort if none of the BF members seals don't workout heres one I found pricey but new.

Some Tange bottom bracket cups also used a seal; AFAIK, they are identical to Shimano. I suspect Tange may have made the Shimano-branded cups with seals.

Thanks. A good source to be aware of for odd parts, and I did notice they had the seals. Just trying to avoid that high price if possible.

On a side note: I did find out that the seal from a 6400 is usable, but not perfectly interchangeable... whatever that means.

Hi, all. I'm building up a 1995 Stumpjumper frame. I have bb cups and lock ring, but u am in need of a 73mm JIS spindle, 125mm give or take. Anyone have something that would do in a bin?

Lots of stuff I don't want (or could get me further to what I need):

FRAMES

• An early 1970's Carlton Kermesse frame in bare steel, 60 or 61cm IIRC, with original chrome fork. Seatlug ears needed some serious work and a stainless tube was brazed in, but not enough brass was used to fill it. The ears are in really bad shape and the whole mess should be cut off and replacement ears like these brazed on.
• A Spin Gen 2 (ex-dockless rental) frameset w/ bottom bracket and chainguard - no fork. Made for 26x1-3/8" wheels. Wheels were shot and I had to use the fork to salvage another Gen 2.

WHEELS / RIMS / HUBS

• A matching pair of Mavic Ksyrium wheels. Same era as the DA7900 group (see below); need to check the model.
• One Sturmey-Archer 40 hole 27" 630mm steel rim hoop from a Raleigh Sprite. Very nice condition. Sorry, don't have the front.
• One Raleigh Twenty / Chopper rear wheel. Original w/AW hub, AW hub does not engage. Straight, good chrome, galvanized spokes.
• One Raleigh Twenty / Chopper rear rim / hoop. Straight, decent chrome.
• A 36h 1975(? - need to verify) Sturmey AW I had hoped to lace into the Raleigh Twenty rear rim above.
• A Raleigh 90mm front hub, 36h. This was also sourced from a Twenty, if I'm not mistaken.
• A dual-wall 559mm something-or-other 1990's MTB rim with a rough brushed aluminum finish. I think it came off of a ProFlex 753, IIRC. I'll find out what it is in the morning. Solid, but stickers are faded.

TIRES

• Quite a few used, solid rubber 26x1-3/8" EA3 tires. Yes, English EA3. They're from the Spin Gen 2's.

GROUPSETS

• Dura-Ace 7900 brifters, crankset, and brakeset. Crankset has some rash, probably needs new rings.

CRANKSETS

• NIB Orgin 8 XLT Road Standard crankset w/bottom bracket, black. 53/39t, 172.5mm.

BRAKES

• Some rear brake linkage doo-dads from said ProFlex 753.

SEATPOSTS

• A really scratched up SR Custom / Nuovo Record two-bolt seatpost in 27.0mm. Needs replacement upper bolts, and polishing - or good for a beater or for a bike where it's going to be installed almost up to the seatlug.
• Campagnolo Super Record single-bolt, short-flute 26.8 seatpost

HEADSETS

• Nuovo Record Italian-threaded headset - decent enough, but top nut is meh.
• Super Record Italian-threaded headset - wrench flats are meh.

KICKSTANDS

• Brand-new, basic dual-leg kickstands suitable for 26" and some 27" bicycles with kickstand plates. No bolt, but conventional threads (can measure). These are from the Spins.

I do know that I will only trade the Nuovo and Super headsets for English Nuovo headsets.

As for the rest...what do you have? When I wrote this, I was thinking about what I have that I don't have an immediate use for, rather than what I'm ISO. (I do need three 26.8 matching non-fluted seatposts, come to think of it).

ISO the cone nut for the end of a SunTour Superbe brake center bolt, as much like the one pictured here as possible:



I've got a Dia Compe brake that I could use as a donor for a similar look, but I'm hoping to find something closer. Right now the front brake on the bike above has an acorn nut where the cone should be.

Sold Gitanes from 1973-1976 and then Bertins became our mainstay brand from 1975 through the end of the decade. The variety of colors were a selling point over PX-10s.

Many of the Gitane Tour de France bikes were upgraded by their owners with saddles being the first thing to go followed by derailleurs then brakes.

In contrast, there were a lot of PX-10s sold in our market place but surprisingly few owners ever changed or upgraded the components. Even the few who raced on them continued to use the Delrin Simplex derailleurs and Mafac brakes that came on their bikes???

I first saw a blue and mustard yellow Peugeot about 10-12 years ago. As Kurt said, it was exciting to look at especially compared to the frumpy all white PX-10s from BITD.



Peugeot, Raleigh and Motobecane were competitors to the bikes we sold so I was very familiar with all the features and shortcomings of those brands. I now have as many Peugeots, Motos and Raleighs as I do Gitanes and Bertins. Funny how things work out...

I have an almost NOS 1989 Peugeot Chorus 753 with a Campy Chorus gruppo that I need to put together. It's anything but frumpy!

Here's one of those frames that Hillary Stone from the UK had for sale. This shows the Chorus colors.
