My friend and I are working on this old Gary Fisher mtb to convert it to a tourer. We're having issues with removing bottom bracket. Any idea on what is needed?

There should be a circlip on each side, after which the unit can be pressed out. There's a pair of replaceable sealed bearings as well as bearing stops(?) to adjust the fit. I don't really see the clips so maybe you have to soak it and push it out?

That raised lip around the outside looks like a clip but there's no gap showing the notches where pliers can prise it out. Strange.

Here's one from an '87 Montare. There's no real lip around the sealed bearing, so I think it's a clip of some sort.

We took out the lock rings and were not able to press it out. My friend is going to take it to his place where he has a shop and press it out somehow. Makes me appreciate the cup and cone BB more.

They're a pain to remove after a few decades but they're still very good BB's, better than most.

I would be soaking it in something strong for a week before forcing it into submission.

I have one of these in an older Gary Fisher Sphinx (cyclo cross), I can check the BB and maybe take some pix but will not be possible until the weekend. I replaced the bearings (once) and don't recall if there was anything tricky but doubt I used anything fancy like a big arbor press. And agreed: soak the Beejeesus out of that rusty shell with the penetrant you like best. I like Kroil.

We've successfully removed the bottom bracket and tried searching for a replacement, however we've run into another issue. It seems that it's a pain to find a 73mm press fit bottom bracket. We could keep the spindle, but then we run into the issue of finding replacement for the bottom bracket cartridge bearings. I believe it's a BBLP26 press fit bottom bracket 73 x 113. Does anyone know if we can find replacement cartridge bearings?

That should not be a big problem, all these BB typically used commonly available industrial cartridge bearings that any well-stocked bearing supplier can sell you. I don't know the number of these off-hand but if somebody else hasn't chimed in by Saturday I can find that info and update. Definitely keep that spindle if it's not damaged, those should last for eons with normal care and use.

Per the Bearing Industry (it speaks with one voice) the dimensions for a 6003 is 17mm (ID or the hole for the spindle) x 35mm (OD, that fits in the BB shell) x 10mm (thickness) check this is same as your old ones before you buy but this is a very common size for bicycles. the "RS" means Rubber Seal and if you want that seal both inboard and outboard (I would) you want "2RS", you can find the same 6003 sold with a seal on only one side (RS), OR with a metal "shield" code for which is "ZZ" for both sides or "Z" for one side only, Typically for a BB that can be exposed to contaminants from both directions (from seat tube) use the "2RS" style
