1987 Specialized Hardrock time capsule

Estate Sale time capsule. Cleaned up nicely. Went through everything. All original and pretty much unridden, except for the tires and rear derailleur cable. 19.5” frame. Portland, Oregon. I’d like to keep it, but it feels a little small, so I thought I’d see what folks thought I could get for a lowly Hardrock in amazing condition.

Thanks!

17 inch frame? They came in 17 and 19. Those U-brakes worked good but dirt would built up there.
That's a nice ride!

Pre pandemic I'd say around $100 to someone that likes red.

During this pandemic, I bet you could get at least $200 since the price of a ready to ride bike is way up. Take lots of photos and detail the maintenance you did.

I'd say probably closer to the $200.00 mark given that you are in Portland and good bikes seem scarcer during this pandemic.

Agree with the others that is likely worth closer to $200 but you could ask for a bit more and negotiate down. I'd be tempted to nab those shifters though and replace them with the cheap sun friction thumbies. They're good and cheap. There are other parts I might be tempted to nab but the suntour thumbies are the most valuable and easiest to replace.

Dang, I'm still looking for my Hard Rock that was stolen in 1993, my first mountain bike. Lemme know if a gray one with a dimple on the right seat stay comes up.

For someone who doesn't sell or buy bikes at all, my first impulse was "Sure, I'd go $250 for one of those." Take that with a grain of salt. I do live in LA.

There has always been a special place in my heart for Specialized bikes, my first mountain bike was a Rock Hopper and it was an awesome orange color. They are of great quality and are superior to department store bikes, but still of good value. You get what you pay for.

Ack, re-reading this, I just realized that it was a Rockhopper, not a Hard Rock. It's also not in my list of bikes, for shame.

But, yeah, I love my Specialized. Wish they still made a nice steel frame.

During the 80's Specialized was just a great bike maker for making good choices when it came to cutting costs and maintaining performance. A good example is on the Hardrock they kept the nice crank set wheels and went with a fairly nice Suntour shift group. They downgraded the seat postt, seat, headset, BB , bars and tube set by one level. This allowed them to produce a bike that road close to on par with the Rockhopper that was only 2lbs not much on 80's MTB for several hundred dollars less that easily out performed nearly anything in it's price range new or and still does used years later.
