Trek 720 for $950

I found this bike on CL and was shocked about the price on it. I believe that this fool is asking way too much, and I just want someone to confirm it.

Bikes are worth what people are willing to pay, like anything else. Value is relative.

I recently bought a 520 in better condition than this bike for $400 on CL. So this seems a bit high. I'm sure someone would pay that though..

Not to mention that you could probably find a new 520 for very close to that asking price to begin with. Again if someone is willing to pay for it...

I have been looking for a 520 or a 720 for a bit now. I might of considered this bike if the price was say under 300. I may offer the guy 200 for the bike and see what he says. I wont pay that much for a "vintage" bike.

There's a real cult fallowing with old Trek bikes...they are worth a lot of money to the right person.

Buy a Fuji or an old Univega....collectors don't really value those near as much and as a guy who's worked on and rode almost every touring bike of the 80's.....most of them are darn near the same bike.

It could be worth that if the frame is in excellent shape and has been updated with high end components. Otherwise I would look elsewhere.

Interesting thread, as I have a 720 frame and fork that I am getting ready to sell and have been trying to decide on a price.

I wouldn't pay anything close to $950 for that. You can get a brand new LHT complete with modern components for about that. I suppose if someone is really into vintage bikes, or has an amazing affinity for that model for some reason, they might be interested. Otherwise I'd say that price is unrealistic.

I don't think the particular 720 shown in the link above is worth anywhere close to $950. It's not "minty" enough to be worth that much to collector, and, in my view, could stand a fair amount of updating before being taken out on the open road for a tour.

An 80's Japanese touring bike in similar condition (Univega, Fuji, etc.) is worth maybe $150 to $250, depending on condition. Treks seem to command a bit of a premium over that.

I think the lugged full Reynolds 531 frame would be a draw for some people. Someone looking for a lugged modern tourer would have to spend more than a LHT for just the frame. An 1983 frame and fork sold recently for $342 on ebay.

I found a 520 for 900 locally, seemed a little steep for a used bike but I'm sure somebody would pay it... too big for me so even if I was willing to pay that price, this isn't the bike for me...

Re the posted 720, I suspect the owner isn't particularly eager to sell.
