What do you all do Garmin GPX files????
So, being fairly new to using GPS, other than the one's I used in the Army, I've been thoroughly enjoying being able to see, track, share and examine my rides via my new Garmin. I download all my rides to GarminConnect and share them on Strava as well. But, I've also been saving (exporting) the rides as "GPS" files. But, why am I doing this? Are they only for instances (as unlikely as I could see possible) that Garmin totally crashes out? Or can I use them somewhere else that is fun and neat? What the heck do you all do with these things????

My understanding is you can upload those files to your GPS to create routes, to get turn by turn directions. So if you ride a new route and want to ride it at a later date you don't have to remember, hmm... which way did I turn here, left or right. Personally I've never uploaded any of these files back into my Garmin.

I create TCX files from my routes on Ridewithgps.com and upload to my Garmin 500 for the turns . I don't do anything with files from the GPS after uploading route to Garmin connect to view the data.

Sample of DashWare output, overlaying GPS data onto ride video. The GPS data sometimes drifts (speed surges) and the software sometimes interpolates funny, but it serves its purpose of entertainment.
You can also load them into TopoFusion Pro (demo version is free with no time limits) and view them on your choice of maps, even in 3D mode. TF Pro also can play your ride back with accompanying data (HR, speed, elevation, power, cadence).

I delete them. IF they are so important... burn them to DVD for archiving.

If you want to keep copies of the data, keep copies of the Fit data from the Garmin. There are some items, Temperature for instance, that aren't captured in the GPX files.
To copy the Fit data, connect the Garmin to your PC. When it is connected, open the File Navigator and open the Garmin Edge device. Go to the Garmin Folder then Activities. In the Activities folder you will find files with the .FIT extension. This is the data that is uploaded to GarminConnect. Make copies of the FIT files to your hard drive or whatever. There are other applications that will read the Fit data, including an application I'm developing.

The ability to export files is helpful in case you you other 3rd party software such as SportTracks, which doesn't easily autosync with the new ANT+ wireless Garmins. Or if you want to upload the data to other websites like Mapmyride or Strava for further analysis.
If you just live on Garmin Connect and never use any other site/software, you'd never really need to export .gpx files. I didn't export a files for years with my Garmin305 because it had a plugin that autodownloaded the data straight into Sporttracks until I upgraded to the 910xt and lost this feature.

Ok....I see what your all getting at here. They would be useful for use with other software, such as the overlay with the video....gotchya. I've got the basic Garmin, the 200, which really does everything I want. But I'm ecstatic that now I get to tell my GF that I "need" a gopro! =) Actually, I might just let Santa know it's on my list
Appreciate the feedback.

I save them all, and occasionally email a zip containing all my rides to myself so its "on the cloud" so to speak.
In 2 years when strava is sued out of existence, and Strava2.com pops up, I'll upload my ride history to that new site. Or, of WKO+ finally annoys me enough and I change to a new software package, I could load all my stuff in the new software no problem.

I upload to garminconnect but also store locally in Garmin Training Centre. I figure GC will sooner or later bork my online data.

Hmmm...I haven't found this particular feature yet on the Garmin site...I should do a little more exploring.
