What have you been wrenching on lately?

Thought I had the downtube shifters done.....the originals were missing bits so I went with some Huret ones I had in the drawer. Turns out, they look great but lack function. So I got looking at the og set and think I can piece them back to life. The brakes though, work great after refresh.

Upgraded mrs non-fixie's DeVos by adding a set of matching off-white Milremo fenders that I found at a jumble sale for €5. Aligning them with the wheels is a bit of a challenge, as you can see, but luckily the owner is not as OCD as I am :

Damn it. I stripped out the extractor threads from the drive side crank on my McLean. I don't mind ruining it, as the operation was to replace the cranks, but this is going to be difficult. I'll look for one of those three-arm gear pullers.
While I had the bike apart, I cleaned it a bit. It is not enjoying life in a barn. I have to take it apart and de-rust and grease every damned nut and bolt. The front brake caliper had one arm seize to the center bolt. I overhauled the whole caliper and brought it back to life. It's an old Campagnolo Record single pivot caliper. Well made indeed. I brushed the pieces with a brass wire brush and added grease. I love having a bench vise.

I was looking for an Eddy Merckx quote about upgrading a bike and came across this quote by Michelle Pfeiffer.
“I relax by taking my bicycle apart and putting it back together again.” — Michelle Pfeiffer
That sure does apply to me. I love wrenching on my bike or components and restoring them to like new or tailoring the bike to my needs/wants. Next up will be my new to me Campagnolo Clipless Pedals that arrived in the post today.
Cheers

Really fine, @ryansu.
I guess I should take comfort that after 40 years of wrenching and giving and taking advice about stripping the crank threads, this was the first time it happened to me. Oh well. Getting the right cranks and front derailleur on this bike has presented a whole host of challenges.

Picked up this Bertoni today. Was gonna part-out, 'cause I thought it was a 59cm, but it's more my size (ugh) at 57cm.
Lots of work ahead...

I like the way you seem to clean everything...I normally do a quick wipe and assemble.
I may take the queue and clean and polish this next build.
I have been collecting stuff for a while and will create a new thread asking which one I should start and finish ove the winter...I like the floor like everyone else!

Time to overhaul/clean/re-grease the Gios A70. The head tube races look great after cleaning so I put the press on them for good measure. I discovered a crack in the Campagnolo Record 9 speed RD. Bummer! Now I have to find another. At least it was found now instead of out on the road!

Worked on the Melton a bit more today. I’m mostly waiting on rim tape, tubes and tires to show up now.

Im waiting on a few parts in the post so played with this old x2000. Went a bit hard on the name plate but there was tin worm under there too.
I wish I took before pics of the Shimano A20 I'm going to use, was way worse than this but came up much better.

I might have one (Record 9), but if I recall it is slightly in need of things. One pulley was loose and the mounting bolt felt a bit loose, but no cracks. Let me know and I will look for it.

My clunker challenge, Trek 520 was jealous of all the attention the Trek 420 was getting as I prepped it for sale. So today I spent about an hour on the 520, not the spa treatment it will get in the winter more of a strip mall cut rate Mani/Pedi : swapped the pedals, took off the fraying Kenda tires and put on some Panaracer Pasela's, new saddle as I used the stock Vetta on the 420 and I was able to put on the new Nitto stem and bars while preserving the current levers and brake cables and housing. Then it was test ride time.
clunker challenge 520 minus the Vetta saddle I used on a 420 rebuild
MKS sneakers to replace no name stamped steel
VO touring - needs breaking in
Nitto technomic stem and wider bars
A shake down on Alki

Well, looks like my rear 600EX hub is dead.
Both the driveside cup and cone look about the same. I looked around a bit on eBay but I'm not sure if it's with rebuilding.
Thankfully I have another set of 650b wheels in the garage, but they are spaced at 135. So in the interest of frugality, looks like the big old Trek is going wide
