Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano Crank

Looking to upgrade from stock Oval crankset to a Shimano 105 r7000. My bracket is from Praxis and my cassette is Shimano 105 cs5800. Can anyone tell me if I need to buy a different bracket or cassette. Any info will be appreciated. Thank you.

I upgraded from a praxis crank/BB to R7000. I needed a new BB and I believe shimano recommends a new front mech as well (if you have a 5800 with the old long arm design).

My praxis crank (and probably your oval crank as well) used an M30 spindle. So your BB is M30 as well (but you should double check). According to praxis, you cannot modify a M30 BB to Hollowtech II. You will need to buy a Hollowtech II BB. Praxis makes one but you don’t need to get it from them. Any Hollowtech II BB will work as long as it fits your frame.

For what it's worth, I don't think that is much of an upgrade. Assuming you have Oval cranks with m30 Praxis rings then the weight is maybe 40-50 gram saving. Praxis rings are great and will be as stiff and shift as well as Shimano. So the "upgrade" to R7000 would be mostly aesthetic unless you are also changing chain ring sizes .

My experience was the opposite. The shifting with my Praxis chainrings was complete and utter garbage - I couldn't jump into the big ring if I was using a harder rear cog. I had to shift down at the back so the chain would "catch".

That being said, I'm fairly certain my bike was damaged or defective due to an overly soft FD hanger, so that could have something to do with it as well. All I know is that going to the R7000 crank solved my issue.
