Why do we wear high ankle socks?
why? I just wear them because everyone else is, but is there a real reason to wearing higher ankle socks as opposed to the ones that show you ankle?

I, for one, refuse to buy the expensive bike socks and simply ride with the shorter ankle high nike socks. No adverse affects yet...and not even one person has tried to stone me for daring to bare my ankles.

Better yet, why wear socks that are specifically designed for the left or right foot? I got a couple pairs of low cut Nike socks designed for running. The socks are very thin on the bottom and sheer on the top. The socks do a excellent job letting cooling airflow pass over the feet but the balls of my feet start developing a minor hot spot due to the limited padding.

chrisvu05, don't go out of your way trying to get a tan anywhere on your body. Hands are way, way overexposed to sun on the vast majority of people as it is already. Intentional tans are harmful.

I wear plain white tube socks. I am a diabetic who has lost 2 toes off of his foot due to an infection and my dr advised me to wear white cotton socks whenever possible to avoid that in the future. Cycling socks put too much pressure on my lower legs and do not help my already diminished circulation.

No known reason for the high top socks. There's no need to protect the ankles (but going gloveless is another story.)

I just wear WrightSock...the same ones I use for running. The two layers are fantastic and I've had no foot issues whatsoever from cycling OR running.

I am seeing a lot more people wearing the longer socks these days. Not just covering the ankles, but halfway up to the knee. They look stupid to me, but I suppose there's an additional place for a sponsor's logo.

I like the added warmth over my ankles on cool mornings but besides the team kit socks or the winter woolies, I usually wear the ankle socks.

i hate high socks. i either wear no-see-ums or the low cut defeets. i think lance kinda made the high socks cool again, but seriously they are super geeky. the old school no sock look is always better looking.

The only time I wear the micro socks is in brutally hot weather. It is nice to have the protruding ankle bones covered because they can get knocked around while aboard a bicycle. The small amount of extra padding provided by the elastic and wool rib is helpful in preventing nicks, scratches, and dings to one's flesh!
