What is the difference between the Shimano Inter-8 and Nexus 8?

In my experience, which is somewhat limited, they are the same. If you look at this: SHIMANO it seems that "Inter-8" is an umbrella category that includes both "Nexus" and "Alfine".

As far as ratio jumps the two are quite similar. But the chart says nothing about the internal design or grade of manufacturing. Interesting that the 7 shows no 1:1 ratio, suggesting no direct drive where friction losses would be least. I wonder if the ".99" ratio, in the 7, is a rounding off error. Andy

Dan- I thought that there was an internal/gear train difference between the 7 and the 8 geared hubs. My understanding of IGH efficiency is that the gear with the least gear train has the least power loss. This comes from the SA AW, Sachs Torpedo Boy and the Shimano 333 stuff where 2nd gears were direct. It is fairly easy to feel the efficiency differences between running through the gear system and direct. I have much less experience with current IGH offerings, while I've done quite a number of after service test rides on many IGH bikes over the years that's not a good time to try to feel out the subtleties of IGH internal efficiency with other goals and limited time coming first.
