Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Oof - the most significant climb, by a big margin, is 70 miles in to the ride? That would hurt me.

That's a lot of climbing.

Do they do the same route every year? Not sure how that would feel with the bulk of the climbing so late into the ride.

I finally picked up a foam roller - man, I should have done that years ago. Guads and IT band have been getting tight, with what riding I've done this winter, and I've felt some knee discomfort creeping in. Using the roller hurts (riding the line between 'soooo good' and 'ow'), but even 10 minutes on it has my legs feeling great. Will try workin' the back, too.

For the century ride, they may have had some minor changes in the first 20 miles over the years. But there's only two roads that go over the mountains in that area, so to do a loop you're pretty well locked in to one route for the rest of it.

Add to that the fact that it's June, there's no shade on the big climb, and, riding at my speed, you hit the mountain at 1 p.m.ish, and it can get pretty toasty on a sunny day.

This has been such a pathetic excuse for a winter that I have been forced to dig deep into the archives for a wintery eagle picture. This one is from 2016. I remember 2015 and 16 were two serious winters. 2020, not so much.

You're right about the food. I've not spent that much time there but it is nearly impossible to get bad food there. Even street food is outstanding.

So you thought you were gonna ride 100 miles, huh? Maybe you need to climb a big hill.

That was the voice of the Cherohoala talking, not me. I guess the one 70 miles in that WhyFi mentioned.

Since you asked, I guess Gresham to Timberline is the biggest hill I've climbed (but not the toughest)

One nice thing about riding up and down Mt. Hood is the pleasant course profile:

Where I live, some of yalls drive ways are prolly a mountain to me. I’ve thought about how much of a wake up call it would be for me if i ever get to do some serious climbing.

When I lived in Alaska there was a mountain literally right down the street from my house. It had a walking path all the way to the top of it. The difference between this mountain and the ones I’m used to in the blue ridge, the walking path went straight up, where blue ridge they cut back. Long story short it took me prolly 6 tries to get to the top. I remember old ladies literally running past me as i was on all fours trying to catch my breath. I imagine that’s how it will be all over again on my bike if I ever get to do some climbing.

A friend from Wisconsin snapped a cell phone pic of a couple eagles in the snow yesterday:

Activating credit cards we've held for 30 years, and they no longer accept foreign phone numbers. We have two cds with them too, and no way to access the account. The one option that was offered is that my wife fly to the US, receive the text, and read it back on the phone immediately. Then, presumably, she could fly back home and we'd be good until we need to access the account again. Another trip north. If anyone tries to tell you we live in a global world, tell them to go fly a ******g kite

If you get a mobile rig and have overnighters at TYS, maybe you can be woken up some day.

How long were you in AK? Were you a pilot there?

I was only there for 6 months. Flew bush, and did aerial mapping. Everybody needs to go to alaska at least once.

Sort of. 9,000 seems high until you realize I start at 5,280. Of course, 14,000 is high, no matter where you start.
