Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Had family visiting yesterday so no riding. Got in 60 miles today. Was planning to go further but bike wasn't shifting too well so decided to cut it short. Naturally I got a flat on the way home. First one on the new bike. Fixed without any drama.

Skin still recovering from sunburn from the previous week's ride, so stayed home and raced on Zwift instead. Did the 3R Tour of Fire and Ice Hilly Race. Did not manage to get a sub-1 hour result on the Alpe du Zwift segment, was six minutes over the target time. But on the bright side, got lucky with the wheel of fortune and earned the Lightweight Meilenstein wheelset for the effort!

Ugly case of sweat blisters on my arms and thighs afterwards

The chore list got big so skipped the Saturday ride. Spent hours pruning the neighbor's fruit tree- it needed so much more than it was getting...

Some around town riding today to grandkid events, & trying out some new wheels & tires- 23/27mm tubulars @60psi- comfy!

About 30 miles yesterday, nice and easy. Today, we had winds gusting to about 50 mph, so I took a zero. Just too much wind fo rme. Power out, limbs down. A big mess.

Tuesday I did my evening ride to Davis Is. for 27 miles. Someone in a car complemented me on my Lynskey. That might be one of the few times someone said something nice about my bike. Thursday did a repeat of the Davis Is. ride. Saturday was very windy and cold. I took my bike to Upper Tampa Bay trail and did three times up and back on the trail. The way out was pure torture into the wind. The way back was easy. Felt pretty crappy anyways. I think the pollen was getting to me. 41 miles total.

Did a fitness check ride on a route I mapped out last year. About 4 miles of it was closed to cars because they tore the road down to gravel for a repave. About a mile of it was covered in visqueen (thick black plastic tarping to prevent water damage), which was weird as hell to ride on. Pushed a bit in the last three hours because I knew I’d be racing the sunset. Felt pretty good at the end, so I'm stoked with where I'm at.

No club ride Saturday due to the threat of rain so I took the mountain bike out to an area with lots of sandstone. It didn't rain and was beautiful out there. There are lots of features (holes, drop-offs, ruts) in the sandstone and I'm out of practice so it's good I was alone and didn't have friends there to fail in front of. Some of the climbs are brutally steep and have rocks in the middle of turns or g-outs with rocks and ruts, challenging. There is one steep rocky drop of about 50 feet which is full of holes. While I was walking down it some guy flew off and kept going. I felt the ground vibrate when he landed.
Anyway 2.5 hours of that kicked my butt pretty good but I felt good enough Sunday for 40 some miles with hills with the road club.

Mostly indoor trainer sessions and a few walks of 1-2 miles this past week. But I managed to get in a couple of outdoor rides on the same 23 mile route Saturday and Monday. Pretty windy both days but Monday was sunny, a comfortable mid-60s afternoon, enough to make up for the stiff 20 mph wind with gusts to 35 mph.
