yup brake reach and have to find a wheel narrow enough to fit in the frames, not to mention maybe cranks will hit the ground on turns..etc

I'm just not sure how you can easily or maybe even comfortably reconcile a 700c rear and a 520c front.
That's almost 3 inches of difference at the rim. Now, if you find a junior lugged steelie, I've got the decals.

I AM very interested in that Terry Ironman, if it's not a conversion possibility. I'd buy it on eBay and pay the cost to get it to a shop for shipping or whatever.

In order for my gal to ride HNH100 next year, on an Ironman, that's pretty much the only choice for 100 miles.
A larger 700x2 frame is OK, but for 100 miles, not sure. She rides a 47cm women's edition.
She has a 47cm Guerciotti, but that is not going to risk getting sweated on, and it's not the best fit.

I'm building her a 48cm Merckx for Christmas, but it would be better, of course, to have her in the Empire.

In case you're wondering how a Centurion Ironperson Terry should be used now, here are a couple of photos from a year or so ago when the young lady in the photos posted about her beloved bike being stolen. It's just so insufferably cute. I mean, look at the grips -- is that varnished sisal? Send it to her. Nobody could ever be better suited to that bike.

Dunno, but I've been looking at wheels in that price range too. The Shimano RS-11 is almost impossible to find new now. I have a few good front wheels but three bad rear wheels and one that suddenly went so far out of true I need to send it to a friend who's a wheelbuilder to straighten, since I don't have the right tools or tension gauge. Next time I find a wheelset I like I'm gonna get two rear wheels.

I'm currently riding a borrowed set of Mavic CXP21 rims on Ultegra hubs and they're very good. Only wheelset I've ridden that didn't need to be trued every couple of weeks from riding on our ridiculously rough chipsealed "roads," other than an older set of Bontrager Race Lite Aero wheels that are really stiff and true, despite having only 16 bladed spokes. Only problem with that wheelset is the rear cartridge bearing went bad a few months ago. I have a spare rear hub and plan to have a local wheelbuilder replace it for me.

Earlier this year, in the pre-pandemic Before Time, I could have snagged a set of Mavic's entry level tubeless wheels with tires for around $250. I hesitated and now it's too late. User reviews are mixed for newer Mavic wheels but the positive reviews seem more credible. Some of the negative reviews I've read skew a bit wacko -- like the kind of people who give one-star bad reviews because they don't like the color of the packaging an item came in. So I'd take a chance on the Mavic wheels.

  • Yeah, I had some of those cpx21 wheels but sold them with the Ironman to my biking Buddy. Actually I sold him another set too a aero set CXP 20 something and he said I can borrow his old set but I found rs11 in Austin for 100 bucks and Mavic elite for 20 dollars more in dallas. I think the Mavic are better but I'm not as familiar with the Dallas area as I am the Austin area.
  • The main reason I want to use the newer wheels for a 7 speed is because eventually I'll be turning it into a 10 or 11 speed. And I'm using the 7 speed because that's what I have available. I'm trying to save up for etap.😁

Yes there were Japanese Domestic Market only bikes. The main difference is the name. Japan didn’t recognize the Ironman sport at the time so the Dave Scott bikes only said Expert and Master. Here is mine...

How did you get an Expert with a Master fork in the Expert MV paint scheme?
EDIT: that's not just an Master fork, that's a Master frame in Expert clothing. The tell? - the dropout finishing is different than my Expert, too.
EDIT for brain fart: it ain't a Master fork, either

Beats me. I just got it from the Norfolk VA CL. I guess a sailor brought it back. The Hirako decal is the original bike shop in Japan. (Which is still in business) There is another shop sticker at the bottom of the ST with the phone number. Sadly, it is fading away.

I am curious what do you see different with the Dropout? i am looking at my Expert and Masters and not seeing a difference between them. Seypat's MV yes, has some differences on the Dropouts to the stays.

Well, I only have a Miami Vice Expert in hand, so that was my only reference point. But if your Master has the same treatment as your Expert, then Seypat's is a whole new animal. I also note that his does not have a second set on bottle braze-ons (seat tube). Mine does.

I was hoping you had found another difference with the frames, we have found some differences they are minute changes but a difference none the less. seypat MV is a different animal . The fork is also unique as it is lugged , where the masters are not lugged.

I had a memory lapse there - they were sloping crown - not lugged. So how is @RobbieTunes going to figure this one out?

Was the triple chainring standard with the Hirako versions?

Oh, and no water bottle boss on the seat tube. I remember this bike from another thread!

Since we are talking about dropouts, etc, what does the stamping on the inside of the non-driveside rear dropout refer to? It appears to be a 2 letter stamping that is different on my 2 IMs. You can see it right behind the rear hub axle. Here you go:

The triple and the barcons are the "seypat custom treatment" that goes on every seypat bike. The triples are there for range, but also to limit physical shifting. Most any kind of quick terrain change can be covered with 1 or 2 shifts of the front instead on lots of shifting of the back. That's the same reason I prefer friction over indexed.

But let's not kid ourselves. The triple is on there for range. As RT and Doc will tell you, seypat can't climb for $hit. I have to shift down a gear to get over a speed bump.

The crank is from the 105SC group. All of the FD-6207s I have shift triples. That's why it is on there.

VeloBase.com - Component: Shimano FC-1057, 105SC (triple)

Note to fleslider: You have the BB spec on the 83 Turbo as ? on your site. My 83 had a Sugino Mighty MW-68 BB. It has these sweet Nickel alloy cups!

Thanks seypat I will update it with that as a possible Original component. given it had a Sugino Mighty cranks it seems plausible that it was original .

Back to these stampings. They seem to correspond somewhat to Shimano component dates combined with the serial number on the frame. Spooky!

The red/white serial number is N5S6320. Stamping is JK. Shimano date code for JK would be 1985/Nov.
The MV serial number is N7D7150. Stamping is LC. Shimano date code for LC would be 1987/Mar.

Also, the lugged fork on the MV has Tange TFR-Q dropouts with lawyer lips.
