Exustar Touring Shoes
Hi all,
My apologies if this appeared in a previous post but I've noticed the periodic posts on alternatives to clipless shoes for the C&V crowd so I figured I'd throw this one in the mix:
https://www.nashbar.com/bikes/Product...0052_556202_-1
Not too spendy, spd compatible if one is so inclined, reinforced sole...etc...
I do not have these shoes myself so I can't claim to know how they fit or wear with use but for $40.00 it may be worth trying out.

That's a very good deal! I have a pair of those, purchased from a UK seller a few years back. They run fairly wide, which is what I need, but it's something to keep in mind if you have narrow feet.

I've looked at these shoes off and on for the last year or so. I've wanted something in a classic style cycle shoe. I got a Nashbar catalog in the mail today, saw them on sale, so I ordered a pair.
I came here to make the masses aware....after I ordered mine.

Great. I need a wide shoe. Would you say the sizing is "true"?

That is what I am wondering. In my vittorias from the 1970s I have size 47, but in most modern street shoes a size 12 US is size 45.... curious if these are more like other cycling shoes or more like street shoes. I think I also have size 47 diadorras though if they made a 46.5 that would probably have been better.

Cycling shoe sizing was always sort of a black art to me.....
They used to say that you need to buy your leather cycling shoes about a half size too small so they will eventually mold to your feet and give you a more positive connection between your foot, your pedals, clips and straps, Some even suggested riding your new leather cycling shoes in the rain so it would speed up the break-in/molding to your feet process....sort of another not so comfortable ritual one needed to go through with maybe your Brooks or Ideale leather saddles....
I tried doing it with my Diadora Mesh cycling shoes back in the 80's (My first ever cleated cycling shoes) as I figured it had enough leather parts on it so that it would eventually stretch out.......I think I figured wrong....but being a poor college kid, I slogged on with those not so comfortably sized shoes for a good three years, till the Velcro straps didn't do their thing anymore.....I figured wrong too when I thought the really neat looking white Nike perforated cycling shoes I bought after it would also stretch out....but Damitol!, nobody told me the uppers were some sort of synthetic leather....

Just put in an order for a pair. I've also been looking at these shoes for awhile, but that price seals the deal.
FYI: Right now Nashbar is doing an anniversary sale where if you buy any Nashbar branded item, the whole order ships free (minus exceptions like oversized items.) So you can buy these shoes, and throw in a Nasbar tube for $3.59 (or those crochet fingerless gloves for $7) and not pay for shipping. The offer ends on May 1st.

Mine came in the mail today. The sizing seems spot on. But I'm curious - Is it common practice to string cycling-shoe laces from outside in? I just going to have to re-string them because they are impossible to tighten as they are.

Reviews?
Any comments from those who bought these?
I tried mine out last night for about 15 miles and came away thinking I would have paid close to full price for them. I'm an exact size 10 on every shoe and I went with a 44 on these but given the thinner leather than I was expecting I maybe should have gone with a 43. That said they aren't sloppy and work great when riding. The leather may stretch but my feet will swell in the hot weather to compensate I'm sure and I can always stick an insole in them to take up some room.
They are narrower than my old white Cannondale sneaker type shoes which makes it easier to slip in and out of the clips. They have a nice stiff sole and I didn't feel any numbing. They are lighter than I was expecting and aren't bad to walk in. Less of an 'uphill' feeling than my old Bata Bikers too.
I prefer clipless pedals/shoes when touring due to the ease of getting back in and trying to get a loaded bike moving, but otherwise I may now find miself going back to clips for general riding.

I wore mine for the first time last night. I was using them with Exustar SPD pedals on a fixed gear. They seemed fine, but I haven't ridden enough with them to really say much. They seem comfortable for walking.

I really appreciate the heads up from the OP. I bought a pair and the fit is just fine; I'm very happy with them. I chose the size based on my other cycling shoes. It's nice to have a bit of traction and an comfortable stride when walking, without resorting to relatively bulky MTB shoes.

I rode my on the tandem last weekend. I think the jury is still out. They may be a tad large but I didn't find them as comfortable as the Shimano shoes I usually wear. They were a little lighter but not substantially so; weight is one thing I don't like about the Shimano shoes. The heel counter rubbed a blister on my heel. It has healed though. I'll try again with a thicker sock combination.

No more than any other that I've noticed thus far; perhaps less than my Lake MX170s.

I generally wear a 47, but Nashbar only stocks a 46. Anybody hazard a guess as to whether I might get away with a 46?
