I might hit you up on that.... The only thing is that the locknut will still be silver though.
Oh yes, clipless for sure. Just gotta get him riding first. He's going to need the rise for the handlebars. WHat do you think about getting a different adapter that sits flush (this one can't because of the taper) against the locknut. That way, it'll look a bit closer to a threadless setup. I don't think he cares much for CV aesthetics...

Well, it's hard to follow up the Colnago. Here is a trek 2300 that I built for my brother with everything that I had on hand. Tiagra shifters, ultegra FD, 105 RD, 105 brakeset, FSA energy crank (one of the best alu outboard cranks IMO). Also replaced that dumb alu fork with a woundup that I got on the cheap. The set up looks funky right now. Adapter may be switched out for a quill (or find a more graceful adapter/spacer combo), steerer will be cut down a bit once he dials his position, and the old saddle will probably be replaced.

Well this frame just barely predated STI shifting, although it does hail from the early Shimano SIS days. I recently upgraded my 1988 Trek from 6-spd 105 SIS to full 8-spd DA STI group, the parts of which date around 1990-1993. So I suppose this qualifies as a retro-roadie with STI?

Here is my 1989 Schwinn 974, it used to be the beautiful stock color Ice Blue but a few years ago a meth addict "tweaker" stole it for a few hours until I recovered it and crippled him (you can read the whole story at my Velospace page https://velospace.org/node/28328). I decided since the piece of crap had black spraybombed over the frame and many of the stock Shimano 600 parts, a fully custom redo was in order. I am the original owner, I bought it as a high school graduation present (I also bought a Schwinn Circuit, top-of-the-line Columbus SL lugged frame) to myself since I knew I'd be racing on my college cycling team. The bike is a blast, I love it, and it's great to have my first official "race" bike still in my stable... even after numerous other bikes have come and gone!

this is a great thread, I am also working on a 1985 Pinarello Montello (small frame) very rough paint and decals. My plan is to repaint, new decals and build-up with 8 speed campy valence. i have a nuovo record BB that i plan to use. any advice is appreciated.

i have rebuilt 2 bottecchia pro's back to their original paint and components. and have loved riding my old bike. i just purchased a 1985 pinarello montello (very rough paint and decals) my plan is to re paint, and rebuild with 8 speed campy valence and 2 front chainrings. Or 7speed 3 front chainrings..... any advice?

^Never heard of Campagnolo Valence. Do you mean "Veloce"?
How hilly are your rides? Bad knees? hauling a lot of weight? If so, the triple might be the ticket. Otherwise, you might do well with a compact double.

this thread excites me. I'm on the lookout for 9-speed or 10 speed brifters. I just can't decide to go with a quill adapter, or get an old ITm?cinelli welded stem. ahh the dilemma.

i actually find it pretty easy to hit the up-shift tab with your thumb when in the drops.

Switching back and forth from Shimano to Campy takes about 10 minutes to get used to, each ride, but after that, no problem. The 8sp and 9sp still have to be "felt" a bit, not quite like "flick and forget" Shimano. It's still Campy.

I have always been able to do it with my 10 speed ergos, but others do say they feel like they can not. I have long fingers and my palm does come up off the bar as a go for the shifter with my thumb... hard to describe... it is also easier with a shallow drop handlebar than with some of the 1990s style ergo bend bars (nothing ergo about them for me).

Thanks. Yes, this is my go-fast bike for 40-100 mile rides in good weather. However I still need to lower the gearing a bit, that 53T large ring is too large and I find myself cruising somewhere in the larger half of the cassette (as shown in the photo) when I should be spending most of the time in the smaller half, at least according to Jan Heine gearing philosophy.
