Child Bike Components
I just bought an old adams tandem trail a bike. I am buying a new 6 speed shifter for it. I ordered a shimano tourney 6 speed grip shift from amazon, but now i'm wondering if child handlebars are different size. I just wanted to replace the shifter with an equivalent new one.
My questions are:
Are components on kid bikes just adult bike components?
On the trail a bike i'm not too concerned about weight, if I was setting up a geared bike for solo riding is there a component spectrum? From what I see it looks like there isn't much variability from bike shop bikes to department store bikes with regards to the shifters and derailleurs

That shifter should work fine.
Yes, there is a spectrum. This is not important for a trail-a-bike! It doesn't really need super nice parts.
Components on Walmart bikes are mostly made of painted high-tensile steel and un-reinforced plastic. You can tell from handling them that the fit and finish is sort of like a Matchbox car. As the price goes up you get fiber-reinforced plastic, hardened and plated chromoly steel, stainless steel, aluminum, anodized aluminum, and at the top racy level there's carbon fiber and extra ball bearings in the pivots and pulleys. Toughness of the parts probably tops out in the middle of the spectrum and from there they just get lighter and smoother. The fit and finish is more like a precision tool or a firearm. The same goes for the rest of the bike... the rims, tires, frame, etc.
The nicer parts are probably overpriced but you can often find the bikes on deep discounts for last year's model. If you shop well, you can find a very nice recreational bike for probably under $400 and you can find a bike you can rely on for transportation every day for probably not too much more.
