Dual-pivot brakes.
I guess this "could" go in the mechanical sub-forum, but I guess it kinda fits here too. I believe those old klunky steel frames need dual-pivot braking power, even more than the lighter & more modern ones, so it fits here pretty good. My earliest made dual-pivots are Shimano 600 Tri-Colors, but they've always worked well. The pair I needed to service, are the newer Dura Ace 7700s, which I bought used, and the front actually froze up on me recently, as I was mounting it on a different bike. I found a good guide at Park Tools' site, which anyone can find easily. I was really surprised, at how dirty these were, there was a black sludge inside everything, kinda like I imagine you'd get from riding around railroad tracks. I got the front looking & working almost as good as new now, but still oughta do the rear too, since I primarily use the rear, & not so much the front.

Old, klunky steel frames?
Heh, 25 years from now, I suspect your modern, plasti-fiber disposabike won't even be around for you to issue such epithets about it.

I have a dual pivot and a single pivot on the same bike.
I also happen to think chocolate ice cream is disgusting.

My Delta brakes have 5 pivots, so they must be 2,5 times as good as dual pivot brakes.

They're not too hard to take apart and clean, just keep track of all the little bits and bobs and make sure you know where they go when you put it back together. Scrub with a toothbrush and your favorite solvent, oil all the threads and such, and you're good to go.

I have two sets of DP brakes. One set is Record Ti from '99ish and are on the shelf having been replaced by either Chorus or Athena Monoplanor style brakes. The other is a set of black Veloce which I bought simply because I wanted black Campi brakes for a project. Persoanlly I don't see what all the hubbub is about the tremendous stopping power. It takes a lot of work to get my fat bum up to speed last thing I want to do is stop on a dime. I would rather slow down and hope to keep rolling LOL

So, I guess most of you never upgraded to DP, huh? Don't worry, I'm gonna be looking around, for smart-arsed answers, for any other brake threads anyone might be foolish enough to start. Just so you know, I rode one of my klunky old steel frames, while you all thought about it.

I prefer dual pivots for their ease in setup and better modulation and adjustment.
I fully recognize that modulation and adjustment go hand in hand.
So I'm lazy in that regard, sue me.
I like single pivot 105's and DC BRC200's for tri-bikes:
1-they're light,
2-in a triathlon, you're hardly worried about stopping.
Other than that, dual pivots for me.
Somewhat like BGirll, once I get my arse moving, stopping is not my next concern.
However, when descending, I prefer to keep the white-knuckle days in my past.
If I want to get really excited, I'll eat chocolate ice cream.

I don't have any dual pivot side pull brakes. My bikes have single-pivot sidepull, centerpull, cantilever, and drum brakes.
