Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Frames with short reach and a lot of stack?

I'm a tall guy with a short torso and I'm trying to make a list of everything that might fit me. Here's what I'm looking for:

Seat angle >= 73
Head angle >= 72
Seat tube length >= 500
Reach <= 375
Stack >= 600
Chainstay >= 420
Tire clearances >= 28

And here are a few models I've found that qualify, more or less:

Canyon Endurance
DB Century
DB Airen (F)
Fuji Gran Frondo
Fuji Sportif
Fuji Brevet (F)
Giant Defy
Norco Search
Raleigh Revere (F)
Raleigh Merit
Scott Contessa Solace / Speedster (F)
Scott Solace / Speedster
Specalized Crux
Trek Domane (H2)

Can you think of anything I've missed? The closest match I see Scott's Contessa Solace (except for the mega-short chainstays), followed by the Fuji Sportif. Nothing is exactly right so far. I'm open to Chinese frames as well.

Snap! I'm looking for pretty much exactly the same thing :-) I am 177cm (5'9.5") with a 865-875mm (34-34.5") inseam, and find I need a lot of stack to avoid excessive bar drop, but don't have a super-long torso as a result.

I have a similar list, but added:

Focus Paralane
GT Grade
Merida Ride
Cannondale Synapse

I'd be interested in how you progress with your choice.

You're even more of an outlier than me, I'm 6'1 with a 35.5" inseam.

The bikes I've found with the highest ratio of stack to reach (in the 56ish size, you're more likely looking for a 54 or less so the numbers may change) are:

Fuji Sportif
Giant Anyroad
Blue Prosecco
On One Bish Bash Bosh / Fezarri Shafer
Diamondback Airen
Scott Contessa Speedster / Solace
Specialized Ruby

The GT Grade in bigger sizes has a lot of stack, but the reach numbers in the smaller sizes aren't actually that short. That Focus is pretty interesting. Also the Merida, thanks.

Similar weird build ... I just got a Fuji Sportif. It is a little heavier than I would have liked, but it fits well. On most bikes I take a 56 with as stretch ... On this i could have gone 58 with an 80-mm stem.

If I hadn't gotten such a good deal, I would have considered one of the others on your list but I got a fat percent-off ad at a moment of weakness.

I'm the same height, and your legs are 5 to 5.5" longer than mine.

Is there some repository where you can put in your ideal frame dimensions and then get a listing of who makes a frame of such geometry?

Ribble Sportive Racing might fit the bill. I'm not allowed to post links yet, so you might just have to google.

I'm test riding a loaner 2015 Fuji Gran Fondo at the moment; it's also a Large (58cm) and fits OK with shorter stem (90mm). I'm 177cm (5'9.5"), so normally a 58 would be too big, but it's OK in the Fuji. It does have lots of stack (602mm), so my bar height is comfortable. I still have about an inch of standover over the top tube.

I do recall seeing some on-line site that supposedly told you which bikes had a certain geometry, but I can't recall where; it didn't seem to work very well, though - it didn't' find my Trek Crossrip, which isn't an uncommon bike.

There is the perfect bike that showed up in Seattle recently.

Gitane Traveler (or Traveller).

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...requested.html

Tall frame, short reach

Unfortunately, it looks like the ad has been deleted.

I'm 5'9.5"/34", with slightly short arms.

I found after an exhaustive search for a proper road racebike, the wsd Eddy Merckx Milano 72 had the ideal frame geo. Don't have my printed out frame geo charts handy, but there has been a very slight change in the frame geo over the last two/three years. By memory, the 2015? model had the best reach/stack (somewhere around low 360mm reach / 570+ stack).

The site you may? be thinking of could be Bicycle Counter Culture Stack and Reach chart. However that chart is more for touring/gravel/adventure-type bikes. Its a handy chart if you're after one of those type. Quite a few bikes listed, and keeps being added to by users.

Where do you get that? I see all of the above specifications being checked off on the 56 or 58cm Quest Elite.

Well, its frame stack is a bit short (591), but otherwise Trek's Domane Women's models (56 cm frame) might suit you.

Good hunting!

Good call on that Jamis. Another great choice.

I ended up buying a Raleigh Merit. This in particular:

Couldn't resist. It's $900 in Raleigh's online store for a nice carbon frame, discs, and Tiagra 4700 kit. The geometry is 85% of the way there (bit short in the stays, bit low in the front, but not too far off). They've got a nice return policy, so it seemed worth a dice roll. The green is growing on me.

Old school but the Gios road bikes are worth considering if you are ok with steel.

PS I just saw above post. Let us know how you like the Raleigh. If reach is too long you can consider an upsloping stem.

I ride a Merckx Milano 72 - large woman's model. Fits a treat and I've ridden about 10,000 miles on it. It's no longer in production unfortunately.
It has now reached about 20,000 miles and is due for new bar tape, cables and rear mech. The BB lasted for 18,000 miles.

I crossed paths with a person that until we meant at the end of a climb I only knew him as a name on Strava. His long legs and short torso were such that he HAD to have a bike custom-built for him.

Good luck to the OP and all the other riders seeking the right bike plus fit.

Trek domane has a really high stack as well. Actual Reach can easily be modified with shorter or longer stem.

Im not sure why you specified >72 degree head angle. I own a Fuji Sportif i 52 cm. It has 71.5 degree head angle and 60 mm trail, and it rides REALLY well.

I have ridden a Domane in 52 cm as well and it is sweet too.

Yes. When I was looking for a short tall bike I came across several ladies bikes that fit the bill, only most of them had girly paint jobs too.
